the cheapest -- for both
not something to hung up on in terms of brand name.

(of course my midwest relatives are threatening me with pitchforks for not saying Karo)

I don't usually go for the brand names. As long as it performs the same, I'd use it.

There are three brands at my Walmart. Karo, is the most expensive, then there is the Walmart's Great Value brand that is cheaper. I've bought another one, that is on the opposite side of the section, but I can't think of the name of it right now. It is the cheapest. You will find Karo in the syrup section, not the baking aisle. For cake use I'd go with light corn syrup. It is a pale yellow color.

Cream of Tarter will be in the spice section. You can get it in the name brand spices or the store brand as well, both work fine.

i use the light karo in my glace for cookies and in my modeling chocolate, but that is because it is the only option close at hand. if there was a cheaper option, i would not feel any hesitation about using it. i think it would be pretty hard for a manufacturer to screw up corn syrup (or at least i hope, lol) icon_smile.gif

Wilton's recipe for candy clay (same stuff) is a bag of candy melts (14ozs I think) melted, then a 1/3rd of a cup of corn syrup mixed in. It looks funky, but that is okay. Spread it out on some wax paper and let it sit over night.

For cornsyrup, I usually go for Blackburn's (bigger bottle, costs less) or whatever store brand. Also Dollar General usually has it cheap, especially during the holidays.

Target's brand is the best deal for cream of tartar - a 4 oz nice jar is about 4 bucks, compared to almost $3 for a tiny thing of mccormick's. Target's brand is called "Archer Farms" and is on the spice aisle - hth.
