So I have been baking and messing with the cricut all day. It took a lot of mess ups but I think I have figured it out. I did buy the deep cutting housing and blade today at Hobby Lobby. Also there are those bands in the middle and because of them I had to roll the gumpaste super thin and it was so fragile. So I didn't want to cut them off, I just moved them to the far side of the roll bar. That way I could roll my gumpaste thicker. I rolled it to a 6 on my Atlas pasta maker. I also put the pressure on a 2 because it wasn't cutting correctly at the 1. I moved to the fastest speed too. I don't let the gumpaste dry because the cuts look more jagged. Attached are some pictures. I also was trying out making those sugar tiles. When this cake is finished I am using it for the bridal show next month.

Thanks for your tips icon_smile.gif I just got my cricut expressions yesterday, but the dvd is still on its' way - I can't wait to play with it all!!! Your cake is very pretty, love the sugar tiles and the cut out - If you don't mind my asking, what cartridge did you use?

I did not use a cartridge for the cut out. I drew it, scanned it, and turned it into an svg file and then cut it using. Sure-cuts-a-lot.

I'm still in the research mode, but I'm wondering if you could use fondant or fondant with tylose instead of gumpaste? The thought of using gumpaste for anything other than flowers just doesn't get it for me.

My first attempt, I used a mixture of fondant, gumpaste and a little Gumtex. Rolled it out thin and away I went to cut. I was really satisfied with the results.

For things that are less detailed the thin gumpaste worked well but for the detailed cut like on this cake it just wasn't working so I had to figure out something new. I tried fondant with tylose last night and it worked. I think I like that better but have to try it out today. However, I have to first finish the wedding cake for delivery tomorrow before play time.

It looks beautiful. May I ask did you use a mold for the sugar tiles? I'm saving my pennies for a Cricut as we speak!! icon_biggrin.gif

For the sugar tiles I melted isomalt with a little water. At 320 degrees I added a drop of color and mixed with my thermometer. I took it off the heat at 350 degrees and poured into the new silicone brownie pan that Wilton makes. It has 24 squares. I only poured a little so they wouldn't be too thick. I even have a poured sugar topper to add when I am finished.

Jenn, which Cricut model do you have? I got the Personal at Michael's this week because I can't justify spending the money on the Expressions -- Texas home baker, no cake sales for me. icon_smile.gif I am planning to get SCAL and possibly the DVD that everyone is talking about. I just hope that I can do enough to make my investment worth it.

Thanks!

BTW, Jenn - your cake is gorgeous!! thumbs_up.gif

Gabby, there are several threads going right now. Just run a search for "cricut" and you will have enough reading to keep you occupied for awhile! icon_biggrin.gif

There are at least two other threads about cutting with the Cricut, if I was cooler i'd have the links ready and waiting.... sorry. icon_sad.gif You can use any size cricut, i have the personal one, it just limits the height of the designs that you can cut. Once you de-stickyify the sticky mats you just put s light smear of crisco on it to keep the gumpast/fondant from sticking and off you go!

OMG! That cake is beautiful!!! I've got to learn how to make those sugar tiles! I moved from Canada to the UK last year, and I'm appalled at the lack of "crafty" things here! There is so much selection back in North America. As far as I know, they don't sell cricut machines over here, but now I want one soooo bad!!! You should do a tutorial on that cake if you get a chance! We'd all love to see it. thumbs_up.gif
