Ok so I emailed the bride about 3 weeks ago for her reminder on her final payment which was due two weeks before her event. (its stated in the contract we signed). So she emails me back telling me she doesn't get paid until last Friday and can she send the money then. I told her as long as it was a money order not a problem. So I get an email this last Saturday after delivering 3 wedding cakes it says we found fraudulent activity on our account and the check we sent you cannot be cashed until this coming thursday (OH MY GOODNESS 2 days before the wedding) ok so I am sweating it right... So I email her back saying why don't you go to the bank and ask them to release some cash to you so we can get this squared away she tells me they will not release any funds. What do I do now? Tell her I will not do the cake for her? that's what I am thinking she broke the contract but maybe I am being sour. Thats why I am asking all of you for your opinions. Thanks for listening to me vent.

No money ...No Cake...Period!!! It is not your problem she is having money issues...Yes..you email her back and tell her exactly that you cannot provide a cake since it is not paid in full...No judge or anything would argue with that!!
GET CASH IN HAND NOW! DO NOT deliver or attempt to make the cake without the cash &/or money order first. Its in her contract, let her know if you don't get it in hand NOW, NO CAKE! Personally, the way the excuses are coming, it sounds like she doesn't have the money for the cake. I don't know how many horror stories I have read on here about VERY similiar situations on here & the decorators getting stiffed for their money. The things the bride is saying don't even make sense! Be firm, its in your contract, let her know its in her contract, cash now or no cake. See how fast she comes up with that money.
For the love of all that is holy. Don't buy ingredients, don't make a base, don't do anything until cash in hand. These little issues just seem to happen out of thin air to brides, don't they?
IF her story is legit and IF she really is good for the $, I'm sure she has a close friend or relative that would be willing to lend it to her. Don't take the risk.
I've had fraud happen to my account, the bank doesn't hold your money. They close the account/s immediately and transfer into the new account/s and your money is immediately available. The investigations, etc. come after that happens so you can move on with life and pay bills, etc. She's lying from the sounds of it.
Good Luck!

thanks for all the input I am emailing the monster bride right now and telling her no money by tomorrow am then no cake.
No $$$ no CAKE! It's that simple, remind her that she signed a contract and since you have not received payment that she is in BREACH of that same contract.
I agree with Jamie ... don't do one single thing or spend any money for ingredients until you have CASH in hand.
Heck at this point if the bank is saying there is something fraudulent going on I wouldn't even take a certified check or money order either!
Good luck hun hope all works out for you
At this point, I would contact her and say if I don't have CASH by 9 AM Wednesday, i cannot do the cake. How much money are we talking about here? If this is legit, someone inher family can front her the cash, and she can pay THEM back. Sounds like a tall tale to me...and do not refund her the deposit!

why so generous?
it was due 7/4 -- already 9 days over due.
it's only 5 days to wedding.
so, sorry -- no cake for you.

it's the old:
say what you mean
mean what you say.
your contract says by 2 weeks before
show you mean it.
NO CAKE
Let her know firmly that her bank issues are not YOUR issues. You're sorry she's going thru this right before the wedding, but walmart doesn't let you "buy now pay later" for her cake ingredients.
Agree that her excuses are bullsh*t. I had a bride say she mailed me a money order that never showed up. Gosh, you can't put a stop payment on a money order ".....so what can I do?" I replied, "I don't know what to do about the missing money order, but I must have payment. If the money order shows up later, I will promptly return it to you, but I must have payment as scheduled."
She managed to get me the payment and what do you know ... the original money order she SAYS she mailed never showed up!
P.S. That's why I stipulate that since money orders cannot be stop-paid or traced, if money orders are used, they MUST be mailed with a tracking number.
I worked for a bank for 12 years. I also had checks stolen out of my mailbox before locked mail boxes became popular. Someone forged $12,000.00 of checks on my account. The account was closed as soon as we knew and new account opened. Money available right away...She is totally lying about that.
I state in my contract that "it's due 2 weeks before the wedding and everyday that they are late after the two weeks they are charged an additional $25/day and they risk full forfeiture of ALL money paid up to that point AND their confections"
Like was said, if she's good for the money she ought to have a friend/family member that will loan her the cash so she'll have a cake!
I agree with all the advice given to you so far.....you really need to stick to your contract, she's already broken that contract. You're being way too generous with this bride.
On another note, I wonder about the future of all these young couples who are getting married without a cent of savings to fall back on
Good luck and let us know how this all works out in the end. Do NOT feel like you're the "bad guy" if you don't end up making this cake......this is business not personal.

Same here, just last Friday as a matter of fact.

I agree. When I got married, I'll admit, we spent more then we planned, but we were ok spending more then we planned. We were very financially secure. Of course, when the economy changed, so did our finances...for the worst. We definetly wouldn't have the same wedding today, propbably more like justice of the peace. I often wonder about some of these couples who go all out for the wedding, but then have problems actually paying for it. What ARE they thinking?

I know a young lady who maxed out 7 credit cards on her wedding and that didn't count the new furniture to fill her entire house that she bought on credit. She literally spent not one dime of her own money (used all plastic). That was about 10 years ago .... I'm sure she's still paying for that wedding.

OR she filed bankruptcy and WE'RE ALL paying for it
Not that I don't have a little credit card debt, but WHAT?!?!?! She maxed out 7 credit cards?!?!? Okay, I feel better about my debt. We had to use our cards when my husband lost his job, used up our savings, and then used 2 credit cards. My husband just started working again this past Jannuary (thank you God!). My wedding was 18K, all paid in cash.
No money no cake that's it!!! If she is getting married she should had known what's her budget was or start saving the money in advance. Don't feel bad about it, she understood her contract and you have to stick with it. I know someone who accepted the bride's request of paying with a check after the cake was delivery, and when the baker tried to cashed the check, the bride had already cancel that check. Trust me they do anything in order to get free service.

Harpist AND 3-string quartet for the wedding. For the rice-throwing, she had this HUGE basket of rose petals for the guests to throw (and even as I was walking past it, I couldn't see the rose petals for all of the dollar signs it represented). Reception at what is possibly THE most expensive venue in town, caviar (just a dap on the end of celery sticks, but still!), a 6 tier styrofoam cake PLUS whatever she paid for the sheet cakes (and this venue did their own cakes so they were NOT Costco cakes). Her wedding was about a 45 minute drive from the reception and she had 2 limos to take the bridal party to the reception. Church decorated to the nine's and she was very proud to say she "donated" the church flowers to the church for their service the next day, instead of using them at her reception.
If you have the money for it, then I say go for it. But she used all plastic. And I've no idea what her parents may have paid for.
Ok so I emailed her and told her no money by tomorrow AM and there will be no cake this is the response I got:
Ok ill call my parents after work and try to get some by tomorrow ill also talk to my bank and see if there is something I can do
Then on top of all that the check she said she mailed on Friday well it never showed up how convenient boy these people amaze me.
I just want to tell her that she is such a liar liar liar but ohwell.....
Again thanks for letting me vent you guys are great!!!
I would so NOT do this cake at all! Not even go near it for all the money in the world. She will have post ceremony regret and find "a problem" with the cake and want a refund. Cut your losses early and run, run, run
If she can't get a family member or a good friend to lend her the money, don't do it. You must stick to your guns, she has had plenty of time & she knew this payment had to be made.
Shes gonna try, huh? PLEASE let us know how hard she tries. And as for that other wedding, WOW!. Our flowers for the ceremony aisle were easily transformed into center pieces for the tables. In fact, I said if they couldn't be used for the tables, they wouldn't be used at all. But I had a great florist & BEAUTIFUL flowers.
Is this girl related to my bride for this weekend? I'm still waiting to see if she pays me by tonight (the deadline that I gave her.) She swears that her fiance will send the money through paypal when her gets home from work. I'm hoping that he doesn't, because I am SO done with them now! You probably feel the same way about "Little Miss Bank Took My Money!"
I should suggest that they could pay me through paypal. Are you in Colorado? heck maybe its the same darn monster bride who knows. BUt I will update everyone on the saga of the non paying bride or miss bank took my money as soon as I hear from her if I hear from her I am sure she is sweating it now miss I am a bride with almost no cakie.
