I was wondering if anyone had any idea how the daily planet on top was made. I can't get the photo to load so here's the link I am doing a birthday cake that needs one and I love this. It looks like it might be sugar though, which is out of my league. I pm'd the maker, but I haven't heard back yet. What do you all think?

She says everything is gumpaste. My suggestion would be to blow up a very small balloon or something and form the gumpaste around it,then when it hardens you can just pop the balloon and you would be left with the hollow globe. hth.

I would use a styrofoam ball from michaels or hobby lobby....smooth with buttercream and then wrap in gumpaste
mrsmontgomery said to use a small balloon to make the globe. you could also use the same technique, just with a band around the balloon instead of covering the whole thing. use a slightly larger balloon to do so, and then attach the ring with halved toothpicks. HTH.
this is just my guess and I'm only going by looking at the picture: Measure around the ball and then cut a strip of fondant that length and the width that you want it. Cut the letters seperate and then lay them on the strip. I can see that the ring is out from the ball and i'm thinking maybe she put little wires every so often and then put the strip onto the wires...does that make sense???
Maybe someone will have a better idea or you will hear back from the maker....good luck.
What about using RKT for the globe? Just a thought because you could probably dowel it.
I think it could be a styrofoam ball covered in gumpaste. The ring can be on top od a smaller ring of gumpaste that goes around the ball.

If you see, she used the Wilton lettering, and she made a strip smaller than the lettering
to glue the lettering on. This is the outside ring. If I was to do this I would do a smaller ring of gumpaste(smaller than the strip where the letters go)...But I would do it thicker so i could glue this ring to the ball and the glue the lettering on top ot this gumpaste ring to make it look like is 3D.
Is like when you use marshmallow to make something pop out of a cake, or when you use tape in scrapbooking, to make it look 3D.
I hope you can understand what I said..
Im not saying that this is what she did, this is more what I would do.
