Everyone buys at the last minute literally but 20.00 is good for one if it is free shipping.. bought one this morning... thumbs_up.gif Scal is a good investment as well takes a little more time then putting a cartridge in but cheeper in the long run once you have it down it's pretty easy...

andpotts - i have the small version of cricut and it works very well. i'm just beginning to play with it but have good results so far.
i've been using fondant with a little tylose added.
inkscape is a free download and scal is well worth $75.
the basics of scal and lots of free images are on the scrapping table site that andpotts listed on this thread

another great source for both inkscape and scal is
http: //scrappydew.com/tutorials/files/category-video-tutorial.php
there are lots of tutorials in their video library.

i especially love inkscape as it has so many possibilities in design. you have to be patient with it as it requires more keyboard commands than most software.
for instance, to select multiple images you must hold down the shift key and click on each image. in my experience selecting multiples is usually done with the control key.

i was happy with today's project. i wanted to make a name in flame shaped letters. i googled flame alphabet and copied the characters as a .jpg file.
on inkscape i tweaked it to make the flames sharper and saved it as an .svg file.
the scal program imports .svg files and communicates to the cricut so it cuts the design.

it's a bit overwhelming at first to learn the programs but the results are well worth it!

Just saw another deal from Big Lots...the Create for $99. What's the better option -- Cutter for $75 or Create for $99? I'm new to this and don't really know much about either besides they both are die-cut machines.

Walmart has them Friday morning for $188.00 for the circut machine

polkadot

i believe that the major difference is in the size of the object each will cut. the create machine has a greater range.
the cricut site has brief descriptions of all three machines:

there has been some discussion about purchasing from ebay. i got personal cricut machine on ebay without any problems.
i've been buying on ebay for years and have only been burned once. the site has become more user friendly over time and it is now fairly simple to see which sellers are reputable.
i'm really happy for all of you who are getting new ones this week on sale. the prices sound really good.
i'm a pretty good baker but don't have much skill with an exacto knife so i really love my new toy!

If you can get the Create for $99 I would do that, but the original 'personal cutter' for $79 would be just fine. They cut the same sizes, but the Create has some of the advanced features of the Expression, like fit to page and stuff, just a few more bells and whistles. HTH.

Big Lots had sold out of the Create before I could get there. I was thinking the ad said Friday, but they were actually open today. Oh well...

I'm planning to stay up and buy online at Joann's except the website must be down right now...it won't load!

It is 8:20pm PST here, and the Joanns site is still down. I plan to keep refreshing. Hopefully it will be back up by 9pm.

*Whew* what a whirlwind!!! I just got back from Michael's and picked one up for $69.99!!! I got there just 3 minutes before the store closed, and there was only one left. It was fate it seems. icon_razz.gif

Polkadot, I hope you get yours too. I'm disappointed in Joanns online customer service. First the site is down, now they don't even have the correct price listed. That's unacceptable. Since the site was down before I left, I was worried it would still be down after 9pm, so I made my purchase at Michael's instead.

I'd very much like to add a Cricut to my Christmas list. Can anyone tell me if I can use it with fondant with just a little tylose added or does it need to be pure gumpaste? Thanks for any help.

i've only used fondant with tylose but am sure that gumpaste would work too. i'm going to being playing with it tonight with various materials.
i've also tried jennifer dontz's pearl clay but haven't quite gotten it to work yet. i think i'll add a bit of tylose to it.
