Can you create any image /font on your computer and then send it to the cricut to cut it out?? Say images from print shop or something similiar. I just bought the expression on Ebay for only $192.

thanks for your help

Scal is a fabulous program that opens up a whole world of possibilities. The cartridges are great for ease of use. You can use inkscape to create your own custom files to use in scal or there are tons of free files for your scal program already made for you. If you check out my blog I have a few files on there and links to other blogs with files!!!

Did you use SI or MMF? Did you let it dry a little before cutting it? icon_confused.gif TIA!

They are different sizes. I got the $99 one this past week. Works great. I used Satin Ice and did let it sit some before cutting. Just takes trial and error.

I found this chart that explains the differences in ALL the different machines out there! I am leaning toward the Silhouette SD as it will take a SD Memory card to copy files from the computer, that way you can move files around and not have to be connected to the computer to use it. AND it does not have cartridges....just uses things off your computer...love that option. http://www.silhouettemachine.com/default.aspx

One site I found shows that ALL the machines are basically made by the same manufacturer! Have been watching Ebay to see what kind of prices I can find on all of the different brands....some used some new.... prices vary a lot.

There is another thread called "using the cricut with gumpaste" and there Ptanyer is explaining how to prepare the mat for GP check it out, she is experimenting and letting us know step by step.

I watched the thread and now I'm hooked. I've got the Cricut Original which uses the 12"x6" cutting mat. The only thing I'm concerned about, if I use the Cricut for cutting cake decorations, will I need to make my Cricut dedicated for cake decorating purposes only? Folks that use pasta machines for rolling out Sculpey have to make the machine dedicated for Sculpey use only since it is not food safe and will contaminate the machine. I will buy a new cutting mat and cutting blade but will this make the cutouts food safe? I'm always worried about food safety.

Thanks for any help!

Has anyone tried the Silhouette? I am in the process of researching different machines, and this one seems pretty versatile in that you can create your own designs. Not to mention, not having to purchase all of the different cartridges. Thanks!

SHUT UP!!!! I WANT THIS MACHINE!
This is the most perfect thing I have ever seen. The thing that made me NOT WANT the cricut is that I could not put my own designs in it. Not to mention how expensive each cartridge is. I hope someone out here in CC Land has one and can answer the question if this works just as well as the cricut. thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

Just opened my Silhouette SD. I know nothing about these cutters, but the software seems straightforward enough, and the machine looks like the same adaptations can be made as to the Cricut (I have Linda McClure's DVD). I fond a Yahoo group and already know how to make my own cutting mats, so I can save my original mat for the intended purpose icon_lol.gif . I found some files to purchase for cupcake wrappers - pretty detailed - neat!! I'll let you know how it goes, but I have several busy days before I can play with it.

ok, I am getting frustrated!! I bought the cricut expression machine and i have been playing with it for the last 2 hours trying to get it to cut 1 good cut!!! Either it has come out very jagged, or the gumpaste moves and then gets bunched up and I have to hit the stop button or it does not cut all the way through the gumpaste. I don't know how long I am supposed to let the gumpaste harden for before I put it in the machine. Why is my gumpaste moving all around once it starts ? I am putting crisco on the back of it. Please, anyone...any tips????

so I thought the problem with the cricut not cutting properly was that the gumpaste was too soft, so i waited a bit, still bunched up immediately after cutting started. I rerolled, let harden some more, now it is really dry and it still doesnt cut right. Still bunches up. Speed and pressure set at medium and knife is at 6. what am i doing wrong???

Anyone hear of the sure cuts a lot? It lets you create your own designs for the Cricut. I would like to hear from someone who had this.

I am posting a pic of how all of my cuts are coming out on the cricut expression. The cutter is set at 6. The gumpaste set out to dry some and it was rolled out to a #1 in the clay/pasta machine from michaels. I darkened the picture a little hoping so show more detail on it. I hope you can see it.

THANK YOU!!!!
