I love the idea of combining the use of a cricut and cake decorating!!! thanks for sharing your experience! maybe I missed it but just wondering what you do to the cutting mat before and during - I mean do you clean off the sticky glue that comes on it before starting and if so how? and then what do you use to get the fondant or gumpaste to 'stick' to the mat so it doesnt' move?

Who has cut the rubber circles from their Cricut? Did you have any problems and does it still work with paper.

I just got my cricut expressions a few weeks ago I've tried a few images with gum paste/fondant mixed, not nearly as successfully as yours. I just bought the deep cut blade maybe that will help. How thick is your gum paste, did you let it set before the cut?????? Help!!!!

I used my pasta machine and went to 4 on it for thickness. This is about the middle. You have to use the deep blade, won't work without it. I placed my gumpaste out on the mat and let it set about 15 min, minimum. Actually some of them were left longer. (i got side tract) My blade was set on 4. Pressure min (2nd bar I think) speed on 3rd bar.

I did find doing letters below 2 inches was hard. Also after you cleanned the sticky off your mat. You want to place shortening on the mat for your gumpast to stick. I had to reapply after a couple times.

Have fun and just play with it.

PS if you are using markers, make sure you have on the lowest pressure, otherwise it digs in and doesn't write.

I don't know if anyone has tried this, I have use the backing from a frosting sheet to put my gum paste on, so far it has adhered well without slipping, still don't have my thickness of gum paste worked out yet. I haven't had time to remove the sticky from my mat. Frosting sheets do cut really nice and are easy to apply to cake(butter cream or fondant).

I haven't read through all 15 pages of this topic but wanted to mention another idea for those of you using the Cricut. There is a computer program called SCAL out there that you can purchase and make your own designs on it. It is AMAZING and you won't have to purchase those expensive cartridges anymore. I haven't bought one cartridge since I got SCAL and I have literally thousands of images on my computer to choose from or make my own. You can use any fonts as well off of the internet for cutting.

I haven't used it for fondant yet but am tempted to. I'm worried about the fondant getting the blade dirty. anyone have problems with that? I use my Cricut for so many other things though, I've done SOOOO much with it, it really is worth the money IMO.
