I feel like it's staged also, but I don't blame Buddy and his crew...it's all the producers fault. They don't think a show about making pretty cakes will be interesting enough without the drama.

My hope is that Buddy will read about everyone's dissatisfaction and put a stop to the nonsense. Once he has a hit show, he may also have the power to say...Keep It Real!
The stuff we're seeing now was surely shot and in-the-can already when he started posting here about the premiere date. Maybe future shows will reflect what viewers really want to see.

As for the way they speak...I love it...I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and it sounds completely familiar to me. I catch myself saying "Yous" once in awhile (when talking to people I know well), and I still pronounce chocolate just like Buddy does..."chawk-lit"

Btw, my little nephew has been making play-doh cakes and covering them in "fawn-dawnt" ever since he watched a recent episode with me.

Oh and an FYI about the center dowel (or lack thereof): Some decorators who use masonite under their tiers (as Buddy does) do NOT use center dowels when it's a basic stacked cake. Each tier is just glued to the tier below with icing (usually royal) and the weight of the masonite is USUALLY enough to keep the cake stable, as long as it's transported correctly. I use masonite, but I drill holes in the center of each so I can have a center dowel, but it's not unheard of to NOT use a center dowel.

Now I agree some of the drama and high comedy aspects seem staged, but I just wanted to point out that the lack of a dowel proves nothing as far as that cake is concerned. I still love Buddy and LOVE this show!

I love buddy too, staged or not, its fun to watch. I enjoy all of the aspects of the bakery, not just the cakes. The beautiful pastries and cakes, I can't get enough. They don't have to add all of the drama because we decorate cakes and love just seeing that, they are doing all of the stunts for the other part of their audience.

I watched it for, maybe, 6 or 7 minutes.
The scene with the strippers on the cake, up until the mother went yelling through the door about we don't make those sorts of cakes. Everyone doing it on the sly. Not respectful.
I like his cakes, but...

My guess is that he hasn't posted anything recently in response to any of these threads is becasue he has some kind of a "gag order" from the network. They most likely don't want him to tell how much of the show is created for the camera.

When that cake fell yesterday I said the same things that everyone has posted here: The top tiers slid off way too easy, he wouldn't have thrown out the bottom tier, (he would have used it since nothing was wrong with it)
and why didn't he use the elevator? Also, how the heck do you remake all of those gumpaste decorations in such a short time and have them hard enough to use? Totally staged.

I'm also waiting for the day that customers start thinking that it's "no big deal" to make a five-tiered cake with all kinds of personalized gumpaste decorations, because they can do it in an hour and a half on tv!

I like the show, but it's more fictional entertainment than "reality" so far. I like Amazing Wedding Cakes the best of the bunch at this point.

I have posted on a few different threads regarding the phoniness of Cake Boss, and have also said I loved Buddy, Loved the cakes, hated the fake acting BS. If there are still people who think this show doesn't have staged things in it, the bridezilla, the mobsters, the wrong deliveries ( the list could go on), well, I have a bridge to sell them. Are people really that gullible that they think these scenarios aren't fake as H E Double Hockey Sticks??? It is so plainly clear, with the fake acting and the overdramitization or lacktherof? If that Bridezilla did that to anyones cake for real, that person would go ape on them, especially since it was just finished, gorgeous and expensive! And then turn around and make a new one to keep them happy, and an even more expensive one at that! BS! They would have called the cops! Fake, phony, pathetic, but gorgeous cakes and great tips! Keep the tips and the cakes coming, the theatrics are not needed at all. Cakers will watch no matter what because it is something we are interested in!

Kitagrl,
Can you explain about the tie wraps please? What are they and how are they used? I must have missed something there, too. Thanks.

Staged or not, I find it totally entertaining.

I don't think it is meant to be an educational or even true documentary. It is for entertainment, and keeping that in mind, I just love it.

My hubby is 100% Italian and grew up in Brooklyn, and I can tell you the family dynamics are pretty much dead on!

Fight and yell but totally love each other.

What fake acting? They aren't actors, they can't act. They're doing their thing the best they can what with the drama I'm sure the director/producers are demanding. You gotta see past the staging to get the entertaining part. I can just see it, the big guy says "hey, we can go out and act like we're trying to catch some white-ish birds" and the producer/director (whoever) saying "yah yah, that'll be good..........go go". Then rubbing hands together thinking "man this is gonna be great!"

Well I watched it and I'll watch it again if I come across it again while surfing. Not saying I'll watch it instead of something better but........ you know. [/b]

I've seen one mention of the dove cake. Can you legally do that without having the health dept. close you down? My boss and I discuss the show every Tuesday and we both were grossed out over having birds even in a plastic container. I guess everyone got over the bird flu thing???

They didn't fly out gracefully once the doors were opened anyway, so the whole idea seemed dumb.

I love the show! I think it's hilarious! And I do learn a few things here and there from them.

I do think the 16th bday cake was staged. I mean why in the world would you shove it over the top of the railing? When they normally either send it down the elevator or walk around down the stairs together? Crazy.

But I have to say that I thought the cousin who did the ballerina cake did a great job. I felt bad because Mary was kind of mean about it in the beginning. Who knows...maybe that was staged too.

But I love it. I wouldn't miss an episode!

the bird idea grossed me out too and i thought the same thing about the health department. also, when buddy first saw the doves and held one, i thought, "is he going to wash his hands before he goes back to the cake?"- but they didn't show it, the next shot was him decorating the cake again.
