Using A Chocolate Mold For Fondant Help!
Decorating By jymorgan Updated 5 Jul 2009 , 2:56pm by jymorgan
I am trying to make fondant seashells using a chocolate mold. I'm new at this and I'm not sure what to put in the mold so that the fondant will pop out. I tried using powdered sugar but it didn't work, I still had to dig the fondant out and ruin the seashell. I wonder about using non-stick cooking spray. Will that turn my white shells yellow?
Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!
Just used a chocolate mold 2 wks ago with fondant. I used a homemade dusting bag with 1/2 cornstarch and 1/2 powder sugar. Dust the mold with this. Make sure your fondant isn't sticky. I usually knead a little of gumtex in my fondant when making flowers or molding. I made baby rattles for a baby shower cake. HTH.

I make a ball of fondant, flatten it slightly, dust one side with cornstarch, and press that side into the chocolate mold. I press it in, pinch off the excess, smooth the back, & tap the mold on the table. The item usually comes out without any problems. If it sticks, I pop it in the freezer for a few minutes.

I was just doing the same thing...first I tried cornstarch but it didn't seem to do much. Then I tried pam spray...sprayed it in the mold, and then wiped the excess out of the mold and rubbed around the mold with the paper towel that had the pam spray on it. Then I put the fondant in and rolled over it with my rolling pin until I could see the edges through it, and then just used my finger to move the excess away from the edges. The pieces I was making came right out and they weren't yellowed at all. The pam spray also didn't keep the paint from sticking to them
Much easier than the other things I've tried, including the freezer method. I'm kind of too impatient for that one
Thanks everybody! I tried a little bit of all these methods to get the seashells just right! Time to paint them!
