Hey there, I am in dire need for advise or help on making realistic looking seashells out of white chocolate. I have a seashell cake due next weekend, and just have not been able to make the shells look as real as I want them to look. I was thinking about painting the color on, but it's not working.
If anyone has any idea on how I can do this, PLEASE let me know as soon as you can. I would greatly appreciate it!!! Thanks a bunch~ Julia

Why not try making them out of a candy mold? You can still use the white chocolate in them-just be careful melting the chocolate as not to scorch it. I use candy molds alot to decorate on cakes!
Thanks for your reply nanni. I have the molds, but I want to put color in them to make them more realistic. Do you have any ideas on how I could paint the colors on? I have the wilton cany colors and the icing colors, but I can't get the colors I need with the candy color and the icing colors aren't working out with the chocolate.
How about using fondant in the molds! ..or I prefer fondant/gumpaste mixed! After you take them out of the molds , you could either color them with a luster dust OR use finely grated non-toxic chalk...the same way the chalk is used on gumpast flowers!
Why don't you try swirrling your white choc with a little brwon to get the borwn and white effect. I did this for a bridal shower and they turned out great. I had to keep staring new bowls of white to swirl the chocolate in beacuse the colors eventually will run together, but I think they turned out great. I will post a picture in the gallery called blue seashells
i've used both fondant and swirled white chocolate and chocolate in candy molds. if you use fondant you can brush them with dry powder or powder mixed with alcohol/extract. i have to say that the chocolate mixed ones tasted much better!
good luck!

I've made realistic-looking shells and starfish using a mold and fondant. I then brushed the shells and starfish with pure luster dust and a combo of luster dust and clear vanilla flavoring to get a painterly effect.
there ya go-the yaya sisterhood of cake baking rallies again!!! One situation and wonderful solutions!!! Can't get any better than this!!! Everyone is great for the help and ideas when a situation is posted-makes this site the best of the best!!!
..oops! Forget to mention..if you use the fondant and luster dust, don't forget to steam them! It helps seal them!
