Dummy question

I searched the forums and didn't find what I was looking for. I was wondering, on cake dummies, do you reuse them? I need to get some practice in and my family is soooo tired of cake. Also, do you leave the fondant on them? Is that way people use to show? Also, do you put buttercream underneath the fondant? How do you clean them, if they are reusable, how many times can you use them? TIA

I saw under the articles tab that they cover their dummy with clear plastic wrap before decorating it and yes they still put buttercream before the fondant.

well.. you can definately re-use them, probably as much as you want too. until they get really damaged. I have always used buttercream under the fondant, but i read on here somewhere that there is an easier way (actually what i'm searching for now) Some just spray a light mist of water i think. You can also just decorate w/ bc if you want. To clean them is pretty easy.. once its been dry for awhile the icings just chip off. i just take a spatula over a trash can and pry it off... some people use cling wrap underneath then that'll take it off easy too. then i rinse it w/ hot water. i dunno if they can handle a dishwasher or not. sometimes the spatula may chip the foam a little, but that's ok. you can still use it. i just ice and smooth it and it's like it was never there.

I use styrofoam dummy layers on large wedding cakes all the time. If I'm making a fondant cake I just mist the dummy lightly with water and cover with the fondant. (as already mentioned)
If I'm making a buttercream cake I just ice it as if it were a real cake layer.

Cleaning: just pull the fondant of as already mentioned with a butter knife or spatula. Be as careful as you can not to dent the dummy.
Washing with just warm water and letting the dummy dry outside - in the heat, etc. - will do for getting buttercream off.

I only make dummy cakes.

Make sure you sand the upper edges (corners on square pieces as well). They may tear the fondant when you apply it so that is why you soften it by sanding.

Mist the fondant lightly with water. Apply and smooth the fondant.

If you are stacking the layers, let the fondant dry slightly before you layer them. I usually use a bit of piping gel to stick the layers together.

The fondant will last indefinately if you keep it covered lightly with a plastic bag.

To clean the fondant off when you want to change it, soak in hot soapy water and peel the fondant away. You can also place the dummy into the dishwasher and run it.

If the dummy is damaged after you take the fondant off, just repair with royal icing and apply new fondant.

I've used a set of square dummies for 5 cakes now I think. And they're soon to be covered to practice with my airbrush!

I never cover my dummies in plastic, I just soak them in warm water and the sugar dissolves.
