When you post a pic to the gallery, please include SOME information regarding your cake. The kind of cake, type of icing....just some info would be GREAT. It is very frustrating to go into picture after picture and there not be any description!!!! I for one like to read ABOUT your cakes! That to me is one of the best parts of viewing someones pictures. Some of you post multiple pics at one time, just a little info would be so much appreciated!
Thank you in advance!!!!!
Agreed!
And at the risk of sounding spiteful, when I come across a beautiful cake pic with no description, I don't even bother to comment. Because to me, it seems like if the poster didn't care enough to take the time out and include a description (even something short and sweet, like the cake sizes), why should I take the time to "ooh" and "aah" over it?
But don't judge me, that's just IMHO.
Amen, Sister. I said the same thing in a post last week. And cupcakeco, I just viewed an awesome cake, with no description, and decided (before even reading your comment) that I'm not going to give any praise without any info at all. I'm with ya, if they don't have time, I don't either.
I so agree, when I look at a pic I really want to read about how you acheived the look, you have no idea how much you can learn just from a description
I would love it if people included what brand/colors they used. I'm so bad with color, it would really be nice.
couldn't agree more. i am new to the whole decorating world and have learned so much from the descriptions. Big help to people who don't know a lot.
Jaime, I'm not sure that I agree with your logic. A description is a description, no matter what language, and I've seen plenty of photos (gorgeous ones to boot) here with descriptions that weren't in English, and I've commented on some as well.
I feel as though the issue is with the effort put forth. Everyone wants comments, but no one wants to (or feels the need to)describe? This is a learning site, and I feel that a description (even a small one) is all for the benefit of everyone else here. To not include one sort of defeats part of the purpose.
In a nutshell, it's "you get what you give." I don't feel that language is part of that equation.
Hate to be such a negative nancy, but there are plenty of people who choose to turn off comments all together. This is a forum where people have the choice to post, or not, describe how they did what they did or not, leave comments for others, or not. I love to be as helpful as possible, and I ask my fair share of questions, so you bet, I agree with "you get what you give". Not everyone can or wants to be Indy or Edna or Sugarshack. Hooray for them, but it's a bonus. Not a requirement.
To be honest, I am very new to this website and when I was posting my pictures didn't realize what a value it is. I added all my pictures and didn't really give it a second thought not because I didn't want to put effort into it but because you don't know till you really go through the gallery that it's a huge asset. Guess I have some descriptions to post.
Just please don't hold it against the newbies.
Don't forget guys, there are a lot peeps on this site that do not speak English.
And that is totally OK! However, I agree with the effort!! I am more apt to go into the English/Spanish translation site and find out how to say good job or something to that effect if they put SOME sort of description whether I can read it or not. AND, I'm sure there are more people that can write a SIMPLE description (and I don't mean "cake") then cannot! We can learn so much as stated below by what people right just on their pics. Sorry Jaime...I'm not harping on you and I'm sorry if it seems that I am. I just am trying to go through the uncommented pics and am getting SOOOOO very frustrated that picture after picture after picture (you get the idea ) have absolutely NO comment!
You know, I have often thought of (and never followed through with) going to Babelfish and translating a question. Give it a shot! Wouldn't hurt I guess. Google "Babelfish"...I don't know how well it translates word for word, but it might be worth it.
Just last night I was saying the same thing! I was looking at pics and couldn't believe how many didn't have any descriptions. So glad you posted this. I do the same I get excited when I see these amazing cakes and can't wait to read about them. I love reading about flavors, techniques, trouble spots or whatever.
Glad you brought up BabelFish...that is what I was going to suggest...
I used it once to translate a comment from English to Portuguese, for the very reason mentioned above: I came across a cake in the galleries that I found to be amazing, and wanted to comment on it, but I wanted to make sure the artist of the cake understood what I commented. So I typed my phrase into BabelFish and it translated it right into Portuguese for me!
On one hand I agree.....I love to read about peoples cakes and feel disappointed if there isn't a description.
On the other hand.........I feel like such a fraud writing about my own cakes, thinking i am SUCH an amateur that noone would be interested in knowing how I got the end result LOL.
I think it's great when there's a good description with a photo. I've learned a lot about what materials are used for different effects. I've also seen a few cakes that I really liked, wishing I could make the figurines that are on it, only to find out that I can go to the store and buy them, the same way the person posting the photo did!
I do so enjoy reading people's way of doing things. Thank you to those who do put in a bit of description.

Of course we want to know about your cake! Never feel like we won't be! We LOVE LOVE LOVE descriptions!!!!!
I saw a gorgeous cake done by someone in the Czech Republic. Her description was in Czech and I went to freetranslation.com, typed in"Beautiful cake, great job!" and copied and pasted the translation. I say post in your original language and others may make the effort to comment regardless. JMHO
Well, julia77, I've just come back from your photo page drooling over the delicious-looking things you've posted. Descriptions would be mighty welcome and would only enhance your work! In general, I think not only descriptions are wonderful things, but I always hate it when the picture doesn't have a title - when I go through the "last uploads" and see one without a title, it's like seeing the full cake without a description. And I fully agree that, no matter what the language you use is, a description in it is still a help most of the time.

This is also what I do. I do know SOME spanish, but for the most part I as well put it into a translation site and then copy and paste. However, if someone does not leave a description and it's obvious the person does not speak english (like if there is something wrote on the cake in a different language) I do not bother to take the time to translate anything. I will just leave a comment like I would for everyone else. I'm going through the pics that are "uncommented" on and OH MY. There are TONS of pics that have little to no description. To me, "cake" is NOT a description! Of course it's a cake silly!

Would I be wrong, then, to assume that there are many others who are like-minded in the issue? It seems to be somewhat of a hot button.
I can completely understand that some CC members are pro decorators and are probably up to their ears in cake orders (and are gracious enough to pop in and share), and others have barely enough time to post just a picture, what between school and work and such-- but on the other hand, I also feel that if you've got a minute to post, you've got another minute to include a description.
And only because I don't think I actually said it before, I am also one who enjoys reading the descriptions. Very much so!
Babelfish is a great tool! I'm actually surprised that so many have also used it to translate descriptions.
i write descriptions all the time for my photos but i think i write a bit too much lol
I love reading the descriptions. It gives me ideas of different flavors. Thanks to everyone who adds descriptions!
I love reading the descriptions i think its nice to know the little details, ive seen some great ones detailing perhaps who the cake was for, or why there was a party etc, there was one about an 80 year olds suprise birthday party recently, and it was incredibly sweet, makes the whole story of cake seem much more worth it too me
Thank you for this topic....when there is no description i almost wish i could take back the "view"....another thing i get a kick out of is when the person includes words like "beautiful" in their title....i guess i leave that up to the person viewing it...i viewed one yesterday that was named a cake wreck....no story...i did pm her and ask the story...her reply was to just look at the multiple pictures and i would see what she meant... the space for comments is there....why not a few words?
