My New Kitchen - 'six Feet Under' Meets Barbie!
Business By -Tubbs Updated 15 May 2014 , 1:57am by oldspice23
The health inspector just left after giving approval on my new basement kitchen. I'm really pleased and excited - it was a bit of a long haul because it was being done on pretty much a zero budget. I'm concerned that it's already too small, but it is what it is. I can have a freezer away from the kitchen if I need one (I will need one!) Right now I don't know how I will work in the space, so most things can be moved as needed. I will also need some more storage and a rolling rack. Need some orders to pay for those things first!
Do you like the decor?! I chose colours I thought would make me happy, and I do love them - but I think with the stainless steel, and it being a basement, it's a bit morgue-like!!
Now to get some orders!
I LIKE THIS. I WISH IN LOUISIANA WE COULD HAVE THIS.BUT I'M TRYING. HOPE YOU GET LOTS OF ORDERS.

I love it! the colours are fine. Well, you have to start from somewhere and you did. Good luck.
Really nice!!! It doesn't look too small (its a lot bigger than my kitchen!!) are those two different sinks? if so very creative.
Ive seen way smaller then this and they made it work! Youll get ur groove and everything will flow wonderfuly! Congrats!
Looks good to me!I am so freaking jealous! My dh is planning to build me a seperate kitchen but not for 2 more years and I don't have a basement to convert. My best to you and good luck!
LOL! I never even thought about 'morgue' with the stainless stuff until you mentioned it! I looked at the pics first and thought "What does she mean ...'Six Feet Under'?"
Six feet under meets Barbie.....so perfect......LOL....I giggled through your pictures!! I love it! Congratulations!!!
I love it! It does seem small but it is what it is and you'll make it happen. My bakery is lime green and lavendar so I happen to LOVE your colors! Good luck to you and seriously, I wish soooooooo much I would have thought of your idea for my sink. I spent $1200 on a dumb brand new 4 compartment sink that is just way to big for what I need. Congrats to you!
I want one! The sad thing is I have a 1600 sq ft basement but no money to convert it!!!!!!!
I do have one room down there though that is about 500 sq ft that I might be able to do before too long. I am able to bake at home in my upstairs kitchen but I want MY OWN SPACE. I am so tired of cleaning the kitchen before baking.
I love the colors. I want to do mine green and lilac. Calm happy colors. I love pink too!
It's FAb-U-LouS! I love the bright green with the pink - very happy colors indeed. Congratulations - hope your business takes off like gangbusters!
Keep us posted!
makes me feel better about my kitchen..... its hot pink and lime green.... my boyfriend hates it!!!!
Beautiful ~ those colors are cheerful but not too bright.
My basement is what I like to call, "the dungeon". I spend as little time down there as possible.
We also have a creepy sump pump, aka- "portal to Hell". (right out of Amityville Horror)
Thanks for all the lovely comments! I knew I could count on you guys to be excited for me!!
For anyone who's interested, the 'three compartment' sink is a regular double sink, 8" deep; plus a huge 12" deep laundry sink for sanitizing. I didn't have room for a drain board, so there is a wire shelf above the whole counter for drying dishes, plus a smaller gauge wire basket for little bits and pieces to dry. There is also a tiny bar sink for hand-washing. Not fancy, but he ticked all the boxes!!
Regarding the budget - the whole thing went in for around $2500. That doesn't include (fire code) drywall, as we were developing our basement anyway. There are things I still need, but I will pick things up as I go now.
Your kitchen looks GREAT! How awesome! Wishing you tons of good luck and positive vibes your way!
I Like it! Those are the colors that I have in my kitchen.
Maybe you can add some more lighting so it doesn't feel like that to you?
Looks big enough to me. You don't want to have to carry heavy cakes and stuff too far anyways. Nice colors too. I love the $40 fridge.
I'm in Alberta too and soooo jealous that you're ready to make the money. We have yet to convert the basement and I really don't know how much we can afford right now. Plus zoning laws, permits, food safety course, etc....so much to think about.
May I ask where you got your deals? auctions, kijiji?

Very happy colors...good job and no it does not look like a morgue...i see what you mean about the ss making it feel that way, but once you start working in it, you will add your clutter and knick knacks and that will make it more lived in. Its got an antiseptic feel to it because everything is new! Good luck I hope you will be very busy here!
Congratulations! I know what you mean about doing your kitchen on a budget--we are doing ours right now--vinyl flooring should go in tonight. I could have written your email about getting orders to pay for the rest of the stuff you'd like to have! I'm in the same boat. Maybe we can stay in touch and encourage each other!

I'm in Calgary too so thank you for posting this so I can show my husband what can be done for under $5,000! He didn't believe we could do it for a reasonable number...your my hero!
yayyyyy for you.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I BET YOU ARE ON CLOUD#9
it looks BEAUTIFUL!!! my dream
I LOVE the fact that you got a FREE stove and a $40 fridge LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! (have you been shopping at Craig's list )
awww you made me jealous!!
wish you TONS of orders.
I think it's awesome! Your very own cakin space... that means so much! And it's cute as a button. If you've got to be in a confined workspace, it should be easy on the eyes and make you feel good; and yours sure does that!
Thanks again! I do love having my own space. Even the kids knock on the door before they come in!! Yay!!
It's looking a little more 'lived in' now, I have more stuff up on shelves, mixers in, etc.
The stove was free because our neighbours were dumping it to make way for a fancy stainless steel number. The $40 fridge was from Kijiji! Stainless steel tables from Ikea. Sinks from Home Depot (the most expensive part).
You Lucky Duck!! I love it!
I'd love to have a space like that
... being in South Florida, about 10ft. above sea level,
well.... I don't think my cakes would
swim too well!
