Should She Get Credit For Trying?

From the article I just linked to:
While Carrie admits that some people say it's a little tacky, she doesn't think it is.
"I don't think it is because I think that most of the costs associated with a wedding have little to nothing to do with the commitment you're making to one another. So say *i do* in a park and go straight home - no pressies - NO CAKE - no nothing...Our commitment to one another is strong. That's what we're celebrating," she says. Great - i am happy for her - but she still wouldn't be getting any *donated, freebie, sponsored cake off me -
Hmm! Inneresting....thoughts?????
Cheap and nasty - wonder who is donating the wedding gown.
Altho if i knew this as an invited guest i would turn up with no pressie and say -
*presents don't maketh the marriage or stregthen your committments to each other* .......................... then howl laughing.
Some brides to be are just getting cheaper and tackier - and you can't blame the economy - it has to be poor breeding.....................surely.
Bluehue
I posted a poll and thread like this last week. A local yokel did this, and the newspaper here had the nerve to do a story on it.
How is that "nerve?" Just because a newspaper does a story on something doesn't mean it endorses it. I've written stories about people who appalled me. They were definitely interesting ... I just didn't happen to agree with them.
As my former editor would have said, it's a talker. It got people on here reading, didn't it? That's what a newspaper would look for.

Your right not everything can be blamed on the way the economy is, but if someone doesnt feel the need to have a lavish wedding why are they said to be cheap and tacky and come from poor breeding? Maybe they have other things they are spending their money on. I know some people who opted not have have the large wedding and used that money as a down payment on a house. Some people just have different priorities than others. Who are we to judge?

Not having a lavish wedding is not tacky.
Having a lavish wedding that you can afford and that you spend your own money on is not tacky either.
Having a lavish wedding that you expect the vendors to pay for *IS* tacky.

I say you agree to this on the condition the cake is a replica of your business card, with your business name and phone number prominently displayed front and center! Frosting or fondant will be of your choosing. If she wants to have advertising on her wedding program, you can advertise on the cake itself. Seems fair to me.
That is AWESOME!!!! I LOVE IT!!! GENIUS!!
I saw this exact idea on Oprah in the '80's or '90's, along with others that barter for their wedding costs. I think in this economy it will be more popular.

More popular with WHO???
not with me, it won't.

Wow, you guys are harsh! I can't believe most of you have never heard of this, or so it seems that way. I say give her credit for trying. But my bigger question is... Have any of you EVER made a cake for free? Just to show what you can do? (ie..get your name out there).
