How do I make a whale cake?

I am going to attempt a 3-d whale cake for a friends birthday and I'm not sure how to start. I have the betty crocker dome pan, should I use that for the head/body? Can I torte and fill it? How do I get the tail to stand up?

I love this one by puffed_tofu in the gallery and I would like to try to make mine similar, any help appreciated as I've only carved a cake once before!

Hi, I would start with a ball pan and for the tail RKT. I'm so not good at carving. This is just a suggestion. You could PM puffed_tofu and ask how its done! icon_smile.gif

I would think that's a cake that would need to be carved. I'll have to check out Puff's cake and instructions though.

I don't have a template though, that's why I was thinking of the ball/dome pan and hoping that would provide a similar look. It will be the only cake so I'm a little nervous that it won't turn out!
