I have looked at the galleries for the gift box cakes. How do you make the lid? Is it cake? If so, how do you get it to stay up with the tissue paper under it? My daughter wants me to make a cake for her teacher's birthday on Wednesday. I thought this would be the perfect kind of cake for her! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had an open lid for my hat box cake. I used a styrofoam disk that I covered with fondant for it. The craft stores nearest me have several different shapes and sizes.

I kept it open by placing a styrofoam wedge that had been covered with fondant near the opening. My flowers went in front of the wedge.
I used sharped wooden dowels that went into the back underside of the lid and then into the cake to keep it in place.

For my gift box cake I used tall wooden dowels in the front instead of the wedge. I used a cardboard craft box lid that I covered with fondant. They are the boxes (with a lid) that are ready to be decorated or painted, that you can find at Michael's or Hobby Lobby.
I delivered it with the lid off, then added it when I arrived at the shower.
The lower tier had the wide Wilton hidden columns for support.
