I need to build up a portfolio of pictures of cakes I have made to show to potential clients to give them an idea of my skill level and quality of work. I really hate the idea of making multi-tiered cakes for the sake of practice and having all that cake wasted. But I would LOVE the practice and need to build up my collection of pictures.

Have any of you practiced on styrofoam pieces to build up a tiered cake and have it look real? If so, is it a good medium to practice on to build up my skill?

Thanks!

You can definitely do that. Just put some clear packing tape on your styrofoam so that you can wash it off easier. Lots and lots of people do it on here. If you look in my photo's the yellow 5 tier cake is styrofoam and the 3 layer cake with a little opera singer on top is also made out of styrofoam!

You can get multiple pics from one styro cake. Here's a link that shows a cake I did with step by steps http://www.flickr.com/photos/55969028@N00/ (scroll down to "Daisys Pink Center).

Ice a 3-tier, add a ribbon ... take a pic. Add some scrolls and dots .... take a pic. Add some flowers at the border ... take a pic. Add some tiny flowers among the scrolls. .... take a pic.

You now have 4 pics to add to your file. And it's a great way to show a bride how she can add or subtract from a cake to simplify or elaborate a design.

I put buttercream directly on the styro ... I dont' wrap it or anything. Once the BC hardens, it's easy to get off ... I just get the spatula underneath and it pops off in sheets. Rinse under warm water and it's ready to go. Fondant is a little harder to get off so you might want to treat or protect the styro's if using fondant, though.

I can't believe I didn't think of that amazing idea!!!! Multiple pics from one cake!! And the best part is that it will show the progression of complexity, and therefore show the variations available to customers and how each step affects the price! Thank you so much for this idea - you're a genius!
