hi everyone. . . first of all, i'm new to this site n am already hooked! lol. u guys are awesome, n i hope to be as great as you all one day icon_smile.gif.

i just started baking. . . well, not really baking; i'm into the decorating aspect, so just use doctored cake mixes for now. anyways, just started last September n i've mostly done cupcakes (hopefully the attachment worked) with a couple of cakes. i;m inspired after looking at all of your creations here n i'd like to try my first fondant cake for my hubs birthday in 3 weeks. i have designed the cake already (i'm so proud of myself, lol) n it will be a music topsy turvy (i know, ambitious, but i've always been so).

i just received a sample package of fondarific, which i really love! it had the buttercream, chocolate, vanilla, chocolate cherry n lemon. i loved all of them, but just liked the vanilla.

i have heard of satin ice, n it is a little cheaper than the fondarific. can anyone give me their opinion after trying both- best flavor, easiest to work with, how it holds up for a couple of days (i plan on making the ckae at least one day before the party).

i would appreciate any help with this. i want to order the fondant very soon and i wanted to get the best one. thanks a bunch n i'm looking forward to lots of learning! icon_biggrin.gif

I'm also really new to decorating (started in December). I love Satin Ice, and like Fondex too. I've never heard of fondarific. Satin Ice has been really nice for me to work with.

HI. Welcome to CC. Your cuppies are adorable! icon_smile.gif BTW - nothing wrong with using a doctored mix! icon_smile.gif
I also got the samples from Fondarific. It's a neat idea, but I can't justify the extra expense and some of the flavors are a bit strange for cake, I think. But that's just me! I like SatinIce and FondX. IMO, Pettinice is terrible to work with. So far, that's all i've tried.

After using Fondarific last weekend for the first time, I will never go back to SI. I get so frustrated with those little hairline cracks I get on the top edge of my cakes when using SI. I've heard a lot of people complaining about it lately. Not sure if they have changed their recipe or if it's the climate where I live or what... Having said that, I know there are LOTS of people who love SI so.... it's trial and error for each decorator. Have fun!

Wow! I thought that it was me having problems with SI and the cracks at the edge of the cake!!! I really would like to try Fondarific. Can someone tell me how they got their sample packs. Does the buttercream flavored fondant really taste like BC?

I haven't used Satin Ice, but I have heard on this website that a lot of people mix it with Wilton's (like 1 part Wilton's to 3 parts Satin Ice), to make it easier to work with. With that ratio, apparently, it doesn't compromise the flavor (as Wilton's is nasty) and it gives a little more strength and durability to Satin Ice. I have used Fondarific and other people on here say that it is excellent to work with compared to other brands. If you buy the sample pack from Fondarific, you get like a golf ball sized sample of each of 5 flavors. I love the buttercream. It takes just like it! I also liked the chocolate. Some of the more exotic flavors are a bit much and I have only used those on cookies. And to be honest, I didn't care for vanilla. But apparently, this is one of the easiest to work with. I think I read it doesn't dry hard so it is not the preferred fondant for modeling figures. But I am mostly regurgitating what I have read as I have never worked with any other fondants. Hope this helps!

To me, the taste of Fondarific beats Satin Ice by a mile! However, i can get Satin Ice locally, Fondarific has to be shipped, meaning slightly higher + shipping. Turns out to be about 42.00 for a 5lb bucket. BUT, to me, it's worth it.

All the flavors really do seem to be right on, and it is easier to work with. I tried two different cakes with the two different icings on the same weekend. Got frustrated really quick with Satin Ice, after having used Fondarific. So, i guess it comes down to, is it worth the extra? I say yes!

girl, i couldn't believe how easy it is to use, compared to having to get hubby to roll out the SI!! icon_wink.gif

I know i'm a weak thing, with no upper body strength, but hey, you gotta be a body builder to roll out the SI!! lol icon_smile.gif

That's what I end up doing...I couldn't get Satin Ice to work right for me. Like it needed a little more elasticity or something. I thought I was just new and unpracticed. I think I'm going to order the sample pack now too just to see what its all about.

Thanks so much for all of the replies!!! I was so glad to hear all of your comments, and they really helped me make my decision. I'm going to order the fondarific. Since this is my first fondant cake, I need the easiest thing to work with, and it seems the majority of people have had better experience with the fondarific. I know it tastes great already, so that's a plus. It's really smart of them to offer a sample pack like that. Yes, I think the BC tastes just like BC and it's great.
Thanks again, everyone!

I'm new to decorating and very new to fondant. I used Fondarific for my first fondant-covered cake (on my own) and then took it to class to use. It was great to work with, didn't have to add anything to roll it out and keep it from sticking. You can roll it very thin, it helps to spread shortening on your rolling mat, but I didn't have to put anything on my regular rolling pin.

As someone said before, Fondarific doesn't harden, so the plus is you have a much longer working time, BUT you can't use it for figures, bows, flowers and I had a hard time getting it to stay in pleats for a draping effect.

Love the taste of Fondarific but use any other brand for figures/flowers that most likely won't get eaten.

HTH!

Good idea. . . it seems like most people think fondarific isn't the best for modeling, so i will use something else for tht kind of stuff. and you're right- the modeled stuff usually doesn't get eaten anyway icon_smile.gif.

Wow, reading this thread has made me feel so much better. I was in tears and a complete mess the first time I used SI. I haven't done another fondant cake since then. Maybe now I'll try again.

I have tried both and really like the Fond. best for tastes and use. The SI does set up harder though so it's better for modeling. I had alot of issues with cracks on my cakes so the fond. works for me. I just had to up my prices a bit to cover the extra cost icon_smile.gif

Fondarific does taste better, but I just can't justify paying over twice the amount of money for it vs satin ice. If you're doing a cake here and there, it probably doesn't matter as much. But I go through about 20 lbs a week, and it would put a hole in my wallet! icon_biggrin.gif

Guess that's why Duff has a $1,000 min. on his cakes, lol. Yeah, it is really expensive so I am just trying it out for now but I will probably use more Satin Ice during the summer with the humidity and when I get sick of paying the shipping icon_smile.gif

I just started a thread earlier on FondX compared to Satin Ice...I think the FondX is almost as cheap as Satin Ice but tastes nicer and works a bit nicer too.
