Is Sams Club Powdered Sugar Ok For Buttercream?

I'm fairly new at making cakes and haven't experimented a lot with different brands of things. Is Sam's Club (called Bakers and Chefs) powdered sugar okay for bc icing? Ingredients say sugar and cornstarch. It doesn't say cane sugar. I don't want to make a big batch of unusable icing. Thanks.
Any brand PS is just fine - I've used no name and brand and they all work the same for me.
Have Fun!
all i use if the Sams powdered sugar. you get a lot more for less money that way. it is also 10X so it is really fine. i never have any problems with it.
I also use the Sam's Club PS, almost exclusively. No problems but I usually sift. HTH.
According to Wikipedia "Powdered sugar is generally mixed with cornstarch, wheat flour, or calcium phosphate to improve its flowing ability, and thus it is not generally used to sweeten beverages."
that's where I get all my supplies, I use it to make fondant, I like italian buttercreme
I use the 6x sugar but have found that it needs to be sifted. It sometimes has hard clumps of unrefined sugar. Im going to try the 10x and see what happens.
My cake instructor warned us to look at ingredients: some "powdered sugars" are made of beet sugars, which she says do not work as well. I have used Sam's sugar with no problem.
Do you all buy it in bulk? About how much is it for say... 50lbs at Sam's, Costco, BJ's or whatever bulk place you use? Just curious if I want to renew a membership...
I use the 10X Sam's Club powdered sugar all the time, and have never had a problem. Recently I have started sifting all my dry ingredients.

Beet sugar is just slightly less "sweet" than cane sugar, but it works just fine and makes a final product that is indistinguishable from one made with cane sugar. I haven't used Sam's Club brand specifically because there are none in my area, but I've used store-brand from Walmart and two different grocery store chains with no problems whatsoever.

You may need to go into your Sam's to check the prices.
I have an older cost sheet that I really need to update.
It shows:
7 lb bag of 10X powdered sugar - 3.69
25 lbs sugar - 10.59
50 lbs sugar - 18.36
7 lb brown sugar - 3.69
25 lbs All-Purpose Flour - 8.49
4 lb butter ( 4- 1 lb boxes) - 7.32
I plan to travel to the "big city" in the next few days. I can get some updated prices at that time and let you know.

I've stayed away from Sam's powdered sugar because I wasn't sure about it, so I'm glad to find this thread. I've only seen the 7 lb bags though. I'll have to check and see if it is 6X or 10X.
I always buy my granulated sugar there though (Imperial) because it is super fine and there is a huge difference in that and what I was buying at the grocery store.
I only use Sam's Cub powdered sugar for my icing and have never had a problem with it. It comes in a 7 lb bag. I buy the 2lb bag at Wal Mart to make my gumpaste strictly for the convenience.
Oh that's cool, little less than .50/lb that way... I'm paying $1.44 for 2lb bags of Dixie Crystal at WalMart and buying at least 5 at the time. Might just be worth renewing the membership for that.
Hmmmm... I wonder how much powdered sugar I have inhaled in the past 6 months?
I buy 50lbs for 10x Powdered sugar at costco for 19.99, it's .40 cents a pound that way!
I use Sam's ps pretty much exclusively, but I've only ever seen the 7# bags. Hmmmm, I might have to check and see if they carry larger sizes at my store. Thanks for the info!
mmm... I can see online at Sams 25lbs for $10.83

Not bad, pretty close to that Costco price too... Sams is 5 miles from me, Costco is about 25... soooo with gas savings, Sams may be the way to go for me
If you're making just one recipe of BC, do you get an accutate measurement when weighing from bulk PS bags or does it tend to settle and not be as accurate in your recipe as using the exact measured by the 1 or 2 lb. bags/boxes?
You can go to sams (dot) com and get prices for these items in your area (enter your zip code). I did that recently for a cook out for my sons little league team and the prices were accurate online as they were in the store. Sometimes the in store price was cheaper than online...just FYI.

I did this and it says that 10X powdered sugar is available for in-store pickup ... not a brand that I have ever seen in the store, but I'm going to try it and see. I'm a hobby "free cake" baker and I wouldn't want 25 lbs so the price isn't that great, but 7 lbs would still be more convenient than all those 2 lb bags I have sitting around.
I have learned from doing my first cake with bulk ps that you definitely need to sift it. It gets pretty packed in there in such a huge bag. I don't even measure mine out I dip from the bucket, sift and add to mixer. Add til I have the texture I need. Walmart has buckets for 4-5 bucks. Wash and rinse and dry and wallaaa the lids snap tightly on. Great for storing my PS. I got this from a thread once posted. I also label the tops of them along with the date.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know you could look up the prices online for Sam's Club. I really need to get a membership.
Thanks everyone!! All your info is a great help. I think I will go make some icing now for my son's birthday cake.
I actually just came back from Sam's.... I bought three 7lbs bags, 10x sifted for 3.63 a piece. It's the only PS i use and since i switched to them, my buttercream has come out smoother... I love it!
