I just made one a few hours ago. I don't know if there's a tutorial, but he's pretty easy. Just roll red fondant into a ball for his head(amount depends on how big you want him to be.) Then take another ball of red, a bit bigger this time, and roll it into more of an egg shape for his body. Roll out some arms and legs, and bend the "feet" up from his legs. Roll out 2 small white balls for the eyes, and 2 tiny black balls for his pupil. Then a small egg shaped orange piece for his nose. I hope this helps. I would say my elmo head was like a big gumball, and the body was at least 2x that size. Good luck! Oh, and don't forget a black piece for his mouth

The most important part of any character is the actual facial features, just roll out your shapes for the body parts, be sure to look at the character as shapes...it makes it a little easier to visualize putting them together. So once you get all of your shapes then put them together with your "glue" and then the face...just pay close attention to how close the eyes are to the nose and the nose to the mouth and take your time...you will certainly be able to do it. For the pupil of eyes I always use a toothpick to just add one dot of black coloring so the pupil is not raised in comparison to the white. (I have not ever made Elmo, but had so much fun with Blue this week!) I would check youtube for a tutorial, there is a lot there that may even help. Good luck, be sure to post your work...we all love to see it!!

Thank you so much for your replies!

Here is the Elmo I have to make. The thing that I think is really throwing me off is all the detail in the hair and stuff... any ideas?

I would try to prick the fondant with a star icing tip to rough it up a bit. That should give you a little look of the "hair".

Wow thats a cute cake. I would totally do what " CelebrationCakery " said. look at the head as an oval, the body as a cone type anyhow as far as the texture for the hair you can use a tooth pick and just make little not too deep slaches and or theres always the grass tip icon_smile.gif

Well good luck dont forget to show u some pics .

Oh...that is so so cute. It looks like the texture is done with a star tip...practice a little on just a piece of red fondant so you can get the feel of your desired look. I did the texture on a towel with the grass tip, but it is different then what you really want. I think the star tip or maybe even a sharp exacto knife might work too...just short quick and shallow strokes. I can't wait to see how you make out!!!

So, are you saying that I should just prick the fondant pulling out quickly? I was reading around today and saw that a lot of people use rice crispy treats for the bodies of such things as this, is this an easy thing to do? I would think it would be hard to mold and shape but I bet it would be better than having to use all that fondant, It is a big Elmo! lol

You can prick the fondant and see what that looks like but I think just small strokes of dragging the tip will work better for the effect you are looking for.

Elmo is not so huge that you need to make the rice crispy treats. You can get away with using all fondant if you have it on hand. Personally I buy red just because it is hard to get just the right red sometimes with how much coloring you need.

The bathtub in my photos from the Blue's Clues cake it all fondant...I had it on hand so I just used that instead. The weight did not affect the cake at all. You can certainly go either way though.

Here is an Elmo I made. His head and body are styrofoam covered in fondant. I just used one of those Wilton fondant tools that you get at a craft store to pull through the fondant and make it look like fur.

Do you know what tool it was and if it came in a set? I would love to check it out!

Thank you!

It was part of a set. I think there are 5 tools in the package. They're a light green color. A couple of them have a flat, narrow tip. I just used one of those and quickly made little lines in the fondant while it was still soft. It was really pretty easy. Since it's fur, it doesn't have to be perfect, just random lines in a few different directions to get the right effect. Hope this helps!

I made an Elmo cake yesterday. The whites of the eyeballs were made in halves using a rounded 1/2 tbsp, and then glued halves together with royal icing and painted the pupils with black americolor.

For the fur I covered cake in red fondant then I took extra red fondant and dipped pieces in water and stretched it like taffy and applied on top of fondant covered Elmo head in wavy shapes. I used the back of my plastic measuring spoon to define the fur.
