There really isn't a point to this post, I just feel like a total jack*ss and figured it would be most appreciated here on Cake Central. I recently had an order for a wedding and groom's cake. I marked it down in my book and on my calendar for Memorial Day, then spent three days preparing and decorating. The cake turned out beautifully, 3-tier, 14, 10 and 6 inch stacked cake, covered in fondant with sheer black ribbon and delicate black vines piped on. Very satisfied with my work, I drove to the church that was 35 miles away, called the bride and told her I was there with the cake. She asks me what I'm talking about...at first, I think she's just teasing me, but then she says the wedding isn't until Saturday (this is last Monday). Turns out, she didn't say Memorial Day, she said the weekend AFTER Memorial Day. My heart sank so low I could feel it beating in my toes! Basically, after 28 hours of work and more money than I'd like to admit put into it, all of it was for nothing! In the six years that I've been doing cakes, I've gotten one date mixed up before this one, and it was only a small birthday cake and easily remedied. My heart is still breaking over this one, especially considering I have to do it all over again this weekend. Sorry so long, but I'm questioning my sanity here. Has anyone else ever done this?

Oh that would be an awful feeling icon_sad.gif I guess the positive way to look at it is you did a trial run on the design and the actual cake for Saturday will be even better!

Not yet but im sure it's comming. I did have a dream one night that someone called me and said they were comming to pick up their cake and I said "WHAT CAKE?" In my dream I had completely forgotten to make someone's cake. Since that dream, I've been so afraid I really will.

I just keep thinking that at least you were early. What if you THOUGHT she said the weekend after, but she actually said memorial day? That would be worse. Sorry, just trying to see the glass half full...

I'm so sorry!! icon_sad.gif To look at the positive side, at least it was a week early and you have time to redo, rather than having written it down for the week after. Best wishes for the redo.

Unfortunately, yes I have done that. And I had it written correctly on my calendar! I showed up with a large birthday cake at the venue and called the customer (kind of perturbed) and said I am here with the cake, where is everybody? She said the birthday party is TOMORROW. Embarrassed doesn't quite cover how STUPID I felt. At least the cake just went in the fridge for the next day but the stupid feeling was still there when I delivered it.

I don't know if this goes against all that is acceptable in the world of cake baking, but i think i may have attempted to disassemble the cake, wrap it well, ask 3 friends to borrow their freezers and tasted the smallest tier for freshness a few days prior to the wedding. if it was still tasty and fresh, redo the top tier and serve the rest. Really, i don't know if i would have done that at all. i probably would have taken the cake to work and made everyone very happy! I hate that happened, but yes, everyone is correct, better EARLY than LATE. Count that as a blessing!

Thank you all! Everyone is so sweet on here, that's why I'm addicted to the site lol. I did disassemble it, stripped it of fondant and icing, and froze as many of the cake layers as I could. I'm going to check tomorrow and see if they're still up to par, and rebake if they're not. As for the rest, my family and friends had plenty of dessert Monday night! lol

I feel your pain my friend, I not only made the cake a week early, but woke the kids up early from their nap and drove 30 minutes to attend the birthday party the cake was for...and was a week early. I felt pretty dumb when they opened the door and stared at me blankly....I'm holding a cake, the kids are dressed up, holding a present, my husband is standing next to us....DOH

Oh, that stinks! I'm sorry that happened to you. My brain is not reliable anymore so I write everything down and go over it repeatedly. People probably think I'm OCD or something but I just have to make sure I've got it right! lol I do write down the actual date and verify it with them, with a calendar. Hope the next one turns out even better than the first!
