Is it just me or do you also cringe when someone asks you, "How long do you cook a cake?" Don't you bake a cake? Cooking is what is done on top of the stove....baking takes place in an oven.

Am I just too picky?

Cooking is, technically, still correct. Cooking is preparing food for consumption, especially by means of heat. Baking is simply a dry heat method of cooking.

I mean I get what you're saying, it's one of those things that might get on your nerves, but it's not incorrect.

I think it sounds goofy, too. I just assume they don't know the first thing about baking.

I also think it's very funny that so many people assume I love to cook just because I love to bake. I HATE cooking meals. After over 30 years of cooking dinner for my family, I am SO over it. I'd eat a bowl of cereal every night if I had my way!

Yes, because I'm a baker not a cooker. icon_lol.gif

My son told me that I'm a beautiful cooker icon_biggrin.gif

PinkZiab- I have learned so much from your vast knowledge of the science of food. Thank you. I always enjoy your posts icon_smile.gif

I actually don't enjoy baking at all. I'm a looky-lou and I need instant gradification. I do love to cook though and prepare meals. And lucky for my family I'm good at it icon_lol.gif .

I have a hard time when someone thinks I like to cook also. I like to bake cakes. I don't like cooking dinner so much. I especially don't like the smell of cooking dinner, on my clothes. I even have to put a roast in a crock pot and plug it in outside so the house doesn't smell like meat and onoins for two days! Now, I don't mind smelling like chocolate cake or vanilla. That smells great! O.K. one more thing kind of bothers me. My sister sometimes calls me a baker. "My sister the baker". That implies to me that I bake bread. icon_confused.gif I like the words bakery and pastry but not baker. But I guess I can't be called a pastry chef because I didn't go to school for that and I can't be called a bakery because I don't own a shop. icon_rolleyes.gif How about "My sister makes custom cakes". I like that!

It's strange - I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. I have always hated when people say cook instead of bake!!
