It is a real disaster and it started out so right. Any othe time my mmf is perfect, but not today when it is so important to be perfect. I was making a car cake for my grandsons birthday tomorrow. When I finally did get fondant on it, it looks like big foot sat on it....the front window looks flat....my support system underneath failed, I think I made the cake too big, so its not supporting much........I am disgusted....I guess my husband is right, its way out of my area of expertise.........I can only make a nornal cake nothing fancy, and now my grandson has a crappy cake tomorrow. I think I am very depressed.
He'll love any cake that his grandmother made with love. For my son, that is the most important ingredient.
I'm sure he'll be happy.
Sorry that this happened....
I made a race car cake that I think came out very nice and all of your cakes look awesome and way better than any of mine so I know you are talented enough to do a car cake. I bet it was just one of those bad cake days, and your grandson is going to love it!
no offense to DH, but don't ever let ANYONE tell you that anything is out of your relm of expertise. Your cakes are incredible and just because something didn't work out the first time doesn't mean you cannot do it. Look...have you ever watched the cake challenges on Food Network? Have you ever heard them say that "when they did the test run cake". They can't just come in and do something willey nilley without a practice run to see how it will go and so we shouldn't think it would work out for us every time the first time either.
I think the problem was that I made the car too big........I wore myself out trying to roll the mmf out large enough to cover it.......then its almost as if it was too heavy and it flattened the car.......I will try and attach a pic so you can have a good laugh....my hubby just told me alot of love went into the cake and my grandson will love it .....I think I don't know what to think....I am so disappointed....and I don't think I can fix it.
I don't think it looks that bad. I can see what you are talking about the collapsing, but it isn't nearly like I thought it would be. My husband and I had discussed it (before I saw the pics and we thought it was much worse) that you could rough it up and put a remote control or a big toy truck on it like it was a monster truck ralley and they were crushing the car.
LOL thats funny.................hahaha I am tempted to do that..........but he was pretty specific with his request, so I guess he will have to see that Nanna is not perfect............it will be tough, but he needs to know....LOL.thanks for cheering me up.......if that darn windshield was not flat and you stand 20 feet away....its not too bad haha
I think it looks like a cool sports car. Perhaps add some flames or pinstripe details but it reminds me of the sports cars of the 80s. Ignore DH and keep up. Look at all you learned on this car and how much that will help with the next cake. The same things you learned will go forward in all you do. GS will love the cake and be pround of it. I bet he will be telling all his friends "Yea, cool car. My grandma made if for ME!"
He wanted the white stirpes on top. but at this point I figured it was bad enough and let it alone.
May I recommend a good night sleep and in the morning take a look? I don't think it is as bad as you feel it is. I think it may not have turned out as you had planned and it is still a great cake. It is sometimes so sad all we see is what we did wrong and forget to look at what all we did good. I would be proud to have that cake served for my DS at his party and I am sure your GS will be even more so that you made it for him.
Ok, so I jsut looked at your cakes and it is VEY OBVIOUS that you just had a bad fondant day!!! Kepp your chin up, we all have THOSE days! Your cakes are beautiful!
Thank you all for such nice responses. Yes I sure did have a bad fondant day..........I can't understand what made it fall down like that...I think I made it to big for me to handle it. The foundation under it was clearly not enough...........well I will let you know what he says.......I was hoping there was some way to rescue it, but I think its beyond anything short of magic.
If anyone has any ideas on how to fix the winshield so its not laying down, please let me know asap. TY
I think it looks like a sleek sports car! Think Lamborgini! Put some racing stripes on it, he's gonna love it!

That is my thought. I could not remember the name of the car! Weren't they big in the 80s?
I can't wait to hear what he says about the cake. I bet he is going to love it!
I usually keep picking at things I do and am never satisified. I think you might not have built up the roof area enough. If you still want to mess with it, you could cut out the windshield and take out some of the cake directly in front of it from under the fondant. Then smooth that area back out. You can take the extra cake and make your windshield area more straight up and down. Replace the windshield. You might have to put some sort or small border around it. I think that might work. Or you could just leave it alone and know that you are giving your grandson a cake made with love. If we never try something different we'll never learn. Happy birthday to your grandson.
Thank you so much. He absolutely loved it, I was never so happy. I could not believe it when he said, wow thats cool, then he looked at his dad and said thats really cool isn't it......made my day.....especially since the poor kid has a virus for his birthday, and seeing the cake perked him u for a few minutes.............and of course the presents. I guess I will post a pic of him with his cake. Thanks everyone. I know I made many mistakes......and learned so much.
Shoot! It doesn't matter WHAT decade it is!! The Lamborgini is one HOT CAR!!!
I'm soooo happy he liked it and that you were happy!
Gail
I'm so glad things worked out for you! I bet he will be bragging up the cool car cake that his cool grandma made for him for a long time to come.
LOL.........it was suppose to be a dodge viper hahaha...............but he loves Lamboes....maybe he thought it was a Lamborgini too ....thanks...it was the hardest cake I have tried yet., his face lit up and I was all at once really relieved.
That's really sweet!
What a good boy.

What I was gonna say before you presented it and it became a huge hit, was--you could pinch the green together more where the windshield had momentarily appeared earlier and then just set another one to stand up there out of royal or fondant or even cellophane or plastic
Then stick in a couple seat tops--y'know how you see the tops of the driver's seat and the passenger seat sticking up a bit--I'm mean it's already a killer sports car--but that's how you coulda made another windshield--until the grandson fell in love with his Grandma's labor of love. Congrats! Job well done.
He is a good kid.............I mean he really acted like it was great.............maybe he will be an actor when he grows up LOL.........Its pretty bad......but you would think it was a masterpiece the way he reacted. I actually thought about turning it into a convertible haha........then I was thinking about building the flat windshield up with cake etc but I was afraid I would make it worse (hardly possible) and then put my fist in it hahahaha...................thanks your sweet.......and funny.....why don't you have a photos posted? k8memphis? I still can't believe I put that terrible car cake pic in here.............what a disaster............no one commented LOL.......I had a pic up with my grandson, but someone said thats not allowed and deleted it before I could delete it haha. hmmmmmmmmmm
You're funny! No -about the pictures --I don't want to go through any more technology--I have a website and on webshots there's a ton of albums plus photos on the home cpmputer--that's enough to wrestle with kwim.
Madge, not only did I want to see a photo of your grandson, but one of you. I always thought that young blonde in your avatar was you, then when you said you were making a car cake for your grandson, I almost fell off my chair!
I'm SO glad that he loved it, and I'm sure he wasn't just acting. I hope he feels better real soon.
I think it was really good for a first try! It looks like it has working headlights from here! WOW!
I think the cake looks worse to you than anyone else. I am never happy with my cakes but my family and friends seem to like them.
Anyway, I have done very little carving but I have learned that I have to exaggerate the size and details a little or it will get lost when covered with the fondant. For example, your windshield and roof could probably have been cut higher to begin with so there would be more definition and more room for the windshield.
Keep decorating!
It is best to try things out for your family...now you can learn from those mistakes! I think it's great! There is no way I would be able to do that!
Yes I need to cut the windshield higher next time for sure, it looked even flatter when the thing fell. the support was not strong enough LOL...yes it had real working head and tail lights.....I think thats the part that grabbed my grandson ....the closer you get the worse it looks haha...I learned a mess of stuff from this thing.......thanks so much for all the comments......I have to laugh at 55 people looked at it so far and could not think of a thing to say hahahaha they were shocked into silence I think....I love it when people give me tips on what I did wrong.....thanks again
