How do I attach grosgrain ribbon to buttercream icing?

I am doing a cake and need to put grosgrain ribbon around a square cake. I read that I need to iron the back of the ribbon with wax paper so that the wax sticks to the ribbon so that the oil from the shortening won't bleed through. Then how do I make it stick to the buttercream? Will royal icing make it stick?

TIA

I read where al lady used contact paper on the back of the ribbon. I suppose you could use icing on the to attach it.

Like to make the ribbon sticky?

no, you use the sticky side to attach to the ribbon and the smooth side attaches to the icing. I wish i could rememebr where I saw that...

I asked this question once and PinkZiab gave me a great answer! She told me to go to the floral dept in Michael's or Hobby Lobby and get the little corsage pins (with a pearl on the top). Then just put the ribbon around the cake and pin with it with the pearl button pin. Just make sure that you tell the bride, MOB, or someone that the pin is in the cake. Make sure it gets thrown away. I'd probably make someone sign a release form that they understand. You don't want any trouble coming from it.

I have also used pins before. I made small fondant pearls to put on the heads of the pins. The thing with the contact paper is that it helps the ribbon make more crisp corners on square cakes.

Thanks for all the help.

I put the contact paper on the ribbon and then used royal icing dots to connect to the cake. I put a few pins in to hold the ribbon until the royal icing set. Then when I set the cake up, I pulled the pins out. I didn't feel comfortable leaving the pins in with someone else serving the cake other than me.
