Will fondant harden Enough???

Hi Everyone,
I have only worked with fondant once so not really familliar with it. My question is can I make decorations on the cake that need to be hard with fondant or do I have to use gumpaste? I'm doing a poker table so it would be the cards and chips for decorations.

Not sure why you want them hard, but yes use either gumpaste or mix some with the fondant to make them dry hard. You can just use fondant if you want them to be edible.

I always use just fondant and it dries hard enough.

fondant will dry hard enough for what you need, just dry them on something that can get air underneathe like a sterile sponge, or flip them over after some time so underside can dry.

however fondant will not be as strong or sturdy as gumpaste or a mix, but if it's just cards and chips, should be fine.

for stuff that I need to dry really hard and fast I use gumpaste. fondant will dry hard but takes way longer than gumpaste, unless you add tylose to your fondant, that makes it more gumpaste like icon_biggrin.gif

I usually always use just fondant -- as long as you make your decorations far enough in advance and give them plenty of time to dry (sometimes I'll do 2-3 weeks), they're usually fine. If I'm in a hurry I use gumpaste because it dries faster. HTH

Sure, fondant will harden, but it dries rather slowly and will soften if exposed to humidity. To have it dry faster and harder, add some gumpaste or Tylose to your pieces. icon_smile.gif

Once when I needed some playing cards for a cake that I needed to be dried within an hour, I used pastillage. That stuff dries faster than you can blink, and it did the job perfectly!

I like using MMF, will tylose work in it and if so, how much should I add?
