I have seen several cakes in which it looked like an object was either falling into the cake or something was jumping out of the cake. In anycase how is this done? I wanted to do it in fondant. Here is an example of what I am talking about:

LOL at your title, I was picturing the batchelor party stripper jumping out of a cake thing icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Looking at that cake, I think you could cover the cake with fondant, dust well with cornstarch on the area you're going to be cutting over, lay the other piece on, and just cut the top piece and curl it away. I'd cut it with scissors. The center would be covered so if you cut into the bottom layer of fondant it would be hidden.

I have done this several times and it is easier than it looks. Put a base icing or fondant where character will be jumping out . Then make some pointed pieces ( triangular shaped) same color as cake made out of fondant, or 1/2 fondant 1/2 gumpaste. Let dry over a flower former, paper towel holder covered with wax paper etc. When completely dry, place character on cake. Cut slits and insert blunt end of triangle shaped pieces around the figure to look like the paper has been torn as character jumped out of cake. I hope this helps

Over here we call it *an explosion* - because the top of the cake seems as tho it has exploded (in the nicest way) and *something* is exploding out the top.
Hmmm - did that maks sense - icon_redface.gif

Ganache cake - smooth - refridgerate.
Roll out and Cut round disc shape (1/4 inch thickness) from contrasting coloured fondant/medium.
Place in center of cake.
Roll out 2nd coloured Fondant and cover entire cake.
With scaple/small sharp knife and ruler gently cut as many lines from one side of where dic is to the other.
Wait a few minutes - for the edge of the cuts to harden a bit.
Then using tip of scaple/small knife gently lift up centre of each cut and pull nack to edge of disc.

Then sit what ever *explosion* you want in the middle of disc - so as it appears as tho something is exploding out of cake.

If you want to have stars/flowers/hearts/other shapes exploding out of cake - fill a cake pick with some fondant - stick down in middle of ganached cake - place disc over the top of pick - cover cake - cut and fold back edges - then stick wires with fondant shapes down into cake pick.
(same as in my photos...3 tier black and white cake and green floral cake.)
I use 22 gauge wire.

Hope that helps.

I am so sorry to disappoint you (laughing hysterically) but it is not what you think. I will post pictures probably within the next couple of days. I was only making a cake for my daughter's softball team and wanted the softball to look like it had came through.
