How would you support a cake topper for a wedding cake that weighs over a pound? It is 18 oz. The bottom is NOT flat. It is porcelain, so I need to protect it for the future. I was thinking of making a flat piece of gumpaste and letting it dry, to put it on, and then dowel. Any suggestions??

Dowl it of course. How about finding something for it to set on - a gumpaste plaque like you said, or a small mirror or something similar?

There's also this stuff called "tack it" or something like that. It looks like white putty. We used it to make sure stuff didn't fall off of high shelves during earthquakes (I used to live in CA). You could use some in an inconspicuous (sp?) place to secure the topper to the mirror. That way if anyone bumped the table or the cake, it wouldn't come flying off. I thought of the mirror also, but the MOB does not like that idea. I thought the gumpaste plague would be less noticeable and I was going to make it look like cobblestone, since the topper is the bride and groom standing in a garden setting. Thanks for the great suggestions though! Any other ideas??

I think the gumpaste plaque would crack under the weight of the topper...why not cover a small cake board with fondant then dowel it..three dowels would hold it up nicely!

I have successfully used a Wilton "hidden pillar" in the center of the top tier to support heavy toppers.

kelleym, the problem is that the base (underneath) is not flat. There are only flat places on the edge, the center is concave.
