How to make Gelatin Bows & Flowers - Page 51

Ok so i've just spent the last three hours reading this thread, time worth spending I might add, and would love to try this... There are still a few questions I have tho (can you believe that after 50 pages lol) What should the texture be after the sheets are dry, because you have to conform them to shape, and people have said that it is too pliable, but then it hardens... Maybe my eyes are tired, or I reading into this way to much but what exactly happens after you put it on a sheet and it dries??? Is it pliable, you form it, and then it dries??? I'm sorry if I missed something but I really wanna try this like yesterday... Thankx from the newbie

Forgot to ask about how much airbrush color is added to the gelatin and what the heck is fairy dust or pixie dust or whatever it is lol??? I'm a new baker and not sure about all these items... Ask me how to make the perfect eggplant parmesan, or a beautiful ragu and I can tell you in a heartbeat... Thank you all for your patience...

For the small batch of gelatin, use ONE DROP airbrush color. Believe me, that is more than enough!! Fairy dust and pixie dust are very small granules, like a powder and you don't want to use those because they smear and make life miserable (go ahead, ask me how I know that!) icon_lol.gif You want to use Disco Dust only because it has huge granules and gives a great shine. The gelatin remains pliable after drying. Once it comes off the sheet, it is as dry as it gets. It will not hold a particular shape unless you put a wire in it so you can bend it how you want it to be, or glue it to something (or itself as in the case of the bows) If you make a bow out of it, they are not fragile at all, you could literally throw it and it will bounce. icon_lol.gif It really is very cool medium to make things with!

This is the first cake that somebody I didn't know, ordered from me. I am pretty excited that I was able to pull it off. The cake is a 10" and a 6" chocolate cake with Duff Goldman's chocolate icing. (I was going to try and make my own but ran out of time.) The flowers are made from gelatin and are edible (grape, lemon and lime), the rocks are chocolate and the picket fence was cut using the cricut cake out of wilton fondant. I used sure cuts alot and made my own design for the fence. When I delivered it, everyone loved it. It made my day to make somebody else's day. The only problem I had is I wasn't sure what to charge. What would you guys have charged for it? Thanks for looking and any responses would really be helpful.

GORGEOUS work!! You did such a great job!! (now, you need a sturdier board underneath cakes like this, the little wilton ones will not usually hold a heavy cake!) Foamcore, or triple those wilton boards. thumbs_up.gif

Thank you for your tips, I finally got the nerve to try this... I went out today and bought the supplies I thought I could use... Since I don't have the impressions I bought some impressions that I saw in Michaels by Duff, not sure if they will work, but we will see... I used wilton teal gel coloring and the color seems good, I just finished painting the medium on soooooo will keep you posted... One question tho, it doesn't look like there is any wire in the bows, is there???

Yes you can but since they are made from unflavored gelatin they are not tasty. They also have wire in them which can pose a problem as well.

The bows do not need any wires, just the flowers need them.

Ok so I made the sheets and the color is good however the strips are kinda like celephane... They don't break if I bend them but I have a feeling this is not right... Help Please!!! icon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif

Nope, that's right!! Now they do cut like paper so paper punches and such are great. Heat (a hairdryer) will help them bend too when forming the loops.
