How to make Gelatin Bows & Flowers - Page 50

I tried to make my first gelatin bow yesterday. I managed to get the right thickness but when it dried and released itself from the plastic, it dried rippled and wavy. Has this happened to anyone else...where did I go wrong and does anyone know how to prevent this? Thank you.

That's the way it's supposed to dry. You didn't do anything wrong.

That's a great idea, now I have to figure out how it's called in dutch icon_rolleyes.gif
First I'm going to buy a new soft brush.

I made a second flower and I finished my bow icon_biggrin.gif

Just an FYI because I could not get my pictures posted. I put them on Jens Cakes on Facebook. Come check them out. I love them.

Phew! Finally got through all 50 pages of this thread! I can't wait to try this technique, too bad I don't have any upcoming cakes right now! Since they keep so well, perhaps I'll have a go anyway and stow away the "keepers" for a later date.

I haven't been this excited over a new technique in awhile-- hopefully my results will be as impressive as the ones I've seen here!

I have yet to use this technique on a cake but they do keep very well. They look very pretty too.

I have been looking around for something to use to make flames for my bonfire that i am making to put on a cake.
i came across everyones post about making gelatin bows etc.
I have on package of gelatin and i am going to try and make my flames tomorrow.
If anyone has done this or has any tips .
That wouuld be great.
this will be my first time using this idea.
if it works i will get brave and make bows and butterflies

Metweety6: Of course you can make flames. Just cut sheets into a petal type shape and arrange on your cake. I would use different colors of red/orange/yellow. You can even make your sheets using these colors so that each flame will be varigated instead of separate color sheets.

The only problem will be if you are trying to stand up the flames on top of the cake. Although they are stiff I might be tempted to place them into some royal icing to secure their bases but not sure if it will melt the gelatin or not. Good luck!

Absolutely you could make flames! Make them a little on the thick side (as pp said) and they will stand up just fine. I also would make them several different shades of red, orange and yellow to make them more realistic.

Please post a pic of them when you are done!

Oh, Yes, I remember the days of no AC. Thank God we were able to buy a newer house this year and it has Central AC. LOVE IT. I cannot wait to see your flames such a great idea.

So I have a question, and I am pretty sure it has not been asked yet!

I have seen many warnings that getting the gelatin sheets wet will cause them to melt...does that mean that you can reuse sheets of gelatin by melting them down again? I am thinking in particular of those of us just starting, with the too thick/too thin issues and all. I would hate to waste it!

Does anyone know if it is possible to melt down the already dried sheets of gelatin for a do-over?
No, it didn't work for me anyways! I thought the same thing when first making it.....nope, you can't reuse it.

Once the gelatin has dried, it is pretty tough to ruin it....even regular humidity doesn't bother it (refrigeraion humidity DOES) About the only think that will mess it up is getting wet.

boy i am such a dumb butt. i don't think my flames are going to work. I found another recipe .so i wouldn't use so much gelatin incase it doesn't work.
so i used 1 tbs gelatin and 1/4 cup water.. I followed this persons step by step .( if found this recipe by googling) and so far i don't know.. I poured some in my leaf shape plastic mold. they look like they are drying.
well we shall see. thank god this cake is not due till saturday
to bad there is no video to this idea. now that is something i could watch and learn by..
well keep your fingers crossed...
