I am just really surprised by people who claim they are not logging on as much because of the homepage changes. I guess those people are here not for the forums, the advice, the camaraderie, the disagreements, the sensational troll threads, and everything else that the forums provide.

If you live for seeing a picture of one of your cakes fly across the screen for a few moments, I suggest you set up a screensaver on your computer with your own cake pictures and then you won't have to share the glory with anyone! ROFL

There have been many times in the old format that I uploaded a photo and it only spent like two minutes on the homepage before other photos took its place. So really during high upload times, the new page is not much different. Actually I kinda think the new page is more "fair" because it lets all of the new uploads be seen (because now we have to go visit the new uploads) and the "popular photos" are truly the most popular uploads during the day...not just the ones that stayed on the home page long enough to get looked at.

I miss the recent posts being at the very top of the page but that's all.

i really like the old setup more because there was a range of different pictures to look at. Not only could you the all star pictures but the ones that had been last uploaded. It might sound silly but I always would refresh the page to see if my picture that I had just uploaded would show up on the front page. The forums are cool and everything but I love love love looking at everybodys pictures I feel that they inspire me to do cool new stuff....

I like the old set-up of the home page too. When I only had a minute to pop into the site it was fun to peek at the pictures.

I'm relatively new to CC (I joined a year ago but didn't actually start using it to its full potential until very recently) so I can't compare the old and new formats. However, I DO enjoy the new slide show! I disagree with people who say that only the perfect pictures are on the slide show. I have already had 3 of my cakes up there and they stay for a few days! I think of it as a small accomplishment that people actually like my cakes! Sometimes I do a little dance when I go to CC and see my cake!

Give the new format a chance! Let's see what they have in store for us! icon_biggrin.gif

Ok, I am gong to try to explain the reasoning for the changes that are taking place, why it is necessary, and how you can use the site to get everything you want out of it.

For so long CC has really only provided two things, a forum and a photo gallery. Sure there are some articles and videos and recipes, but they all take a back seat to the two main features. This meant that the homepage could easily be filled up with mostly items from those two categories.

This has actually created some bad habits in how to use the site. A website homepage is meant to merely be a snapshot of the latest content from all the subsections of a website. It should not be the end-all be-all of interacting with a website.

We are working on a lot more new features to expand how you can use CC. For example we are adding blogging. We are going to be adding more video content (tutorials), etc. In short, there will be a lot more new content to feature on the homepage. This means the homepage cannot be 90% photos and forum links. The new features will not take hold if they are not featured on the homepage to make people aware of them.

We will add all those categories you like so much to the top of the GALLERIES page. You will still have the current holiday feature, latest uploads, most popular, etc, you will just find them on the GALLERY tab.

Overall the best way to use CC is to utilize the top category tabs to use the section of the site you are interested in. If you just want to pop on and view latest uploads to photos you can always add a bookmark to your browser :

Newest Forum Posts:

http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-fsearch-newposts.html

If you just create those two bookmarks you can quickly get to the latest forum posts or uploaded photos if you just have a couple minutes to see whats new.

The homepage will still be evolving quite a bit over the next few days so please be patient, try to see where we are going with it, and why some change is necessary if the site is going to expand to offer even more useful tools. We do understand your frustration with missing the old homepage, and at the same time not having the full new homepage to replace it.

Who decides which photos appear on the homepage?

It is actually decided by the computer automatically, there is no human element to the decision. There are too many photos uploaded each day for a manual review process. Just as an example, recently we have been averaging in the ballpark of 1000 photos uploaded daily.

This means no matter how we display LATEST UPLOADS, many photos can never make the homepage and photos that do would not last for more than a few minutes.

----------

There are also a few other new features coming down the road that will be really exciting, but I can't talk about them yet.. but they will make you smile.

zoinks - I had no idea so many people would reply...
Neither did I realize Heath had already asked for patience in a separate post.
Absolutely a MASSIVE thank you to Heath and Jackie - I am afraid I sounded ungrateful but I meant no disrespect.

I *love* this site!

Thanks Heath and Jackie for the amount of time you are spending on the improvements for us. Once everything is done, and people get used to going to the Last Uploads section, we will get to see a lot more cakes than just the ones on the home page. It'll be great.... just a matter of time... I'm looking forward to all the changes that are coming....
You guys do a great job! thumbs_up.gif

I guess I don't get why so many are upset.

The new uploads are rarely on the homepage for more than a couple minutes if AT ALL so what's the big deal if they aren't there at all?

Both the gallery and the forum have buttons to view the latest posts/new photos and it isn't like you have to go into each gallery/forum catagory to see what's going on.

I agree. I was almost discouraged about getting on the site because the frontrunners are all you see. And I have to add, the site is not very user friendly. I have trouble getting to different areas, but maybe once I've been on awhile, it will get easier? I even have trouble locating my responses (although they were few).

I think you're confusing not being familiar with how to fully utilize all the features on CC with the site not being user friendly. icon_surprised.gif

It's easy to locate your own posts... After sign in, just hit the "my forum posts" tab on the home page. Voila - there are all your posts.

If there are any topics that you're particularly interested in, you can keep track of them by hitting the "watch this topic for replies" tab.

If you ever need help, all you have to do is ask. The site and the members are VERY user friendly. thumbs_up.gif

HTH

P.S. .... and since Heath has asked that the complaints be held until all the site changes are completed:
