So, here's the story. Co-worker of a woman called me wanting a cake for her last day of work before having her baby. She wanted a cake that looked like a gift. No problem. Then I got an email last night "My colleagues and I were talking about the cake, and started thinking. She is terrified of the delivery, so we were wondering if you could do a cake of a baby being born. Can you do that? She would think it's funny, so I hope you're not offended. I'm torn between a classy cake and one that's a little raunchy"

I don't want to do a cake of a baby being born....it kind of grosses me out. Who would want to eat it? So, I would like to give her a couple of ideas that play off the fear thing without a graphic visual.

Any help?

I was so afraid of delivery that I would get really nauseated each time I tried to read descriptions of it. If this lady feels like that about it, I doubt she'd see the humor of the cake. If someone had given me a cake like that I would have thought they were making fun of me (those pregnancy hormones and all )

I would probably tell the customer that I couldn't think of any way to make a cake of a baby being delivered without including some parts of the female anatomy that no one would want to eat, and that the original idea of the classy cake sounds better (besides a gift cake is much easier to do than the other one would be).

i have seen a cake like this, it was a sheet cake w/ the 'birthing' figures made of fondant. to me, it was a bit much. just tell the client that you are not comfortable making risque cakes. but, if she likes, you could incorporate a stork w/ a baby, as a quirky little 'birthing' joke. or a baby under a cabbage leaf for the gift bow.

If you don't usually do "raunchy" cakes, just tell her you don't do cakes like that.

Pregnant ladies do not have a sense of humour. The birthing cake sounds disgusting, and not even a little funny, IMO. Go with the gift cake, trust me!

the cakewrecks website had some really interesting cakes on this. I find them kinda gross.


If your not comfortable thinking about doing it, chances are your not going to enjoy the whole process of making & decorating the cake.

I'm with justbeck101. The cake would not impact the reputation of the client all that much, but it will yours. Poor taste, is poor taste.

Google "Push Olivia Push Cake" seriously... you do NOT want to do that!!!

I think a pretty and maybe encouraging cake would be better.

Like you could do a basket with baby things piled in it, towels, booties, bottle, rattle... and then a little poem like

"Itsy Bitsy fingers,

Wiggly little toes,

Teeny tiny tummy,

Baby button nose -

Lullabies & Laughter,

Lots of baby things,

And then to fill your heart,

The Love a baby brings."

As scary as labor and delivery are, and they are scary to anticipate, especially the first. Those thoughts of sweet little fingers and toes and the baby smells and holding and sweetness can kind of get your over it, ya know? That may be better than something raunchy...

I would say no. If anything makes you uncomfortable, it is better to turn the idea away. FYI-I never ever ever do any type of "raunchy" cakes. It's not something I want in my portfolio or something I want to be known for. If you don't want to be know for these types of cakes either, don't start making them.

how about a present/package cake with either a baby peeping out of it or the rear end (the baby's rear end, that is)slightly exposed or fingers or toes...something to denote there's a "special delivery"...a "special gift" ...a ups/fedex/usps truck..."all 'deliveries' should be so easy"...

I have a gross sense of humor sometimes and even this would be a little over the top to me for a baby shower. You have to think, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc. are going to be there - it would embarass the mother to be IMO. I think the gift cake would be much more appropriate.

I can't imagine anyway to make the birthing process into a tasteful cake--especially for a coworker who is afraid of the delivery. Are they trying to make her vomit at the shower?? There are so many other options to do a humorous cake without being raunchy --raunchy rarely plays well in a work environment.

I'm all for bringing back "class, finesse and good taste." I wouldn't prepare that sort of cake for anyone under any circumstance, ever. Please don't even consider accomodating this low-class request and insist on your original design.

Do the classy gift & put some details around the cake board relating to the birthing...ie: a stethascope, doctor's mask, a 'paper' with the newly inked baby foot prints, a baby hat, etc. It's birthing undertone with a more respectable, cutsey approach. Good luck!

How about a cake w/ CT nursery rhymes? There are beautiful ones in the gallery. I actually did one for a baby shower... it was very appropriate and a lovely theme.
My DH will never forget being dragged to birthing class w/ our 1st baby. He still remembers the look on my face when the instructor told us we dilate from the size of a cherry to a grapefruit. That was our last class. (and I'm a RN! )

She wants this for a coworker?!?! This is so awful on so many levels. No way.

ROFLMHO. I just looked at the birthing cake on the cakewrecks website and am still lauging (brought me to tears). What a MESS! I would have been mortified if I had that at either of my kids' showers. And I can't immagine what my son would have thought if he saw that cake among pictures of his shower!!!

I would suggest sticking to the original plan.

Thanks ladies. I'm not opposed to doing "adult" cakes for bachelor/bachelorette parties etc , within certain limits. I used to be a labour/delivery nurse ... there is no way to make it a "pretty" cake using that visual. lol

She only needs the cake to serve about 15 people and it is going to be at work in their lunch room....so it's not a big cake to work with.

The one idea that I thought of was having a pregnant woman sitting on a gurney (cake) with a "You can do it!" banner. Maybe that might work for them.

I like the idea of the Fed Ex or UPS delivery with the little baby butt or a head and little hands peeking out of a box. Play on the word "delivery" Heck, even a stork. But there is no way I'd do anything that resembles an actual delivery. It's in poor taste and I can't believe that the mother to be would even appreciate it.

The gurney cake is a cute idea.
I think that would be neat.

I was terrified of delivery, too. If she isn't going "natural" you could do a cake of some pretty good pain meds! (I would say epidural, but that needle is pretty scary. )

If the poor woman is terrified of the whole *birthing* then why would her co workers want to send her into a coma by giving her a cake like that. Sounds like an evil *set up* to me.

Poor thing - i would be mortified if they knew how worried i was from the beginning and then did that.

I am thinking something *petty* like the gift box - why unsettle her nerves any more than they already are. And pray tell - who would want to eat a cake made to look like that - *shudder*

There is this wall plaque that says,"Having children... is like being pecked to death by a duck."
And it has ducks on it. I can think of several designs that would work with this.
