I am one of those people who feels horrible at throwing away perfectly good food, so I was just wondering what you all do with the pieces you cut off your cakes, when levelling for instance?
I usually process the leftovers in my kitchen maschine with a little buttercream until it is well-blended and just a little sticky. After a couple of hours in the fridge, I then roll it into walnut sized balls and then roll those in multicolourd sprinkles.
After another few hours in the fridge to set, they are just Yummy icon_lol.gif In Danish these would be called Romkugler, directly translated that would be Rum Balls. The rum is optional, and I wouldn't use it if they were to be served to children but otherwise, I'd add just a tablespoon to a batch. icon_wink.gif

I don't usually get a chance to do anything with them. My husband and kids usually inhale them.

Cake balls are made with cake (of course) with some icing mixed really well, rolled in a ball. I like to dip them in candy melts, put them on a stick and make cake pops...thanks Bakerella...but thats what I do with the leftover cake cut offs...but cakesbytonya has a point...my hubby and kids devour as much as they can.

I like that word. It sounds way better to me than rum balls or cake balls. I think that is what mine will be known as from now on.

Sorry, but I trash 'em. If anyone (my 16 year old) is in the shop, they have 5 minutes to devour any of the "trim jobs" but then it goes right in the trash. At this point in my life, I'm sick of cake, I dont' eat cake, and I'm not worrying about 8 cents worth of scrap pieces of cake.

Trash can. Straight in the trash can.

I freeze them for later. Cake balls are also great. Instead of icing, I use cream cheese, then dip in chocolate. When I was employed, I would put the scraps into a large bowl and take them to work. The engineers will eat anything.

They would always ask me when I am making another cake. "Hey cake guy, when is the next cake order?"

I make a triffle cake-fruit-pastrycream-and layer until I am out or the bowl is full. I have been known to add a liquer to the fruit or not. I once made it and took to a potluck after my kiddos birthday. Everyone thought I had worked hard on it. It was all left overs!

You can make the trifle like she said or cakeballs. If you want, you can freeze it in ziplocs and make it when you need it. Most of the time my kids and husband eat the scraps so I dont have to worry about it.

When I cut the top off cakes when leveling I reuse the the leftovers by crumbling it and then mixing it with water to make a paste. I use the paste to coat the cake where the two layers meet. I let it sit for a bit then I go about the usual of frosting it and covering it with fondant. By doing this you eliminate that bulge or sagging that you get sometimes. Another great tip is to crumble the cake mix it with a little bit of cinnamon powder and then toast it for a bit in the oven. After its toasted mix it with some melted butter and ta da you can use it as a crust for cheesecakes. Yumm... Cheesecake....

Thanks all for some great suggestions. I'm afraid I'm going to have to bake a cake when I get home, just to try something new. icon_lol.gif
