What I have in my head is a Cat in the Hat hat with the fishbowl (from the Cat in the Hat) on TOP of the hat. Is that insane?
I'm thinking of making the hat out of 6 layers (3 separated 2-layer cakes) - 6" rounds. I might need to start out with 8" rounds and carve to get the "whimsy" look of the hat. From pictures, it looks to me like the diameter of the hat is about half the height of the hat. So 6" rounds stacked 12" high!! OK, that's not the craziest part - could I then use the sports ball pan to make a fishbowl perched on top of the hat??
I'm thinking I could make a "shelf" in the top of the hat as if it were a regular whimsy cake. I'm trying to think through how to secure this disaster-waiting-to-happen! Would I need so many dowels and supports there'd be no room left for cake?
I'd be taking this to my kids' school. I'd really rather not put the fish bowl on top until I get it to the school. I guess, worst case, I could put the fish bown next to the hat?
Someone please either talk me through this or talk me OUT OF IT! 
Have you seen the food network challenge with the cat in the hat cat? Sounds like it would be a fun cake. I'd love to see the finished product. Good luck.
I agree that a fishbowl made of Rice krispy treats would be a lot easier. I'd still wait until you get to school to put it on the top.
why could you not use a small glass fish bowl and a real goldfish. then you could take it off and leave it for the class as a pet. if you use a small one without much water it should weigh less then a layer of cake. I would think you could put cling wrap on the top where the bowl is going to touch if you are concerned about that.
There's been some golf bag cakes that I'm sure are probably the same issue, all height and no base support. I would find a few of those pics and PM and ask for some info on how they supported.
Ask LOTS of questions. I've heard a couple disaster stories on golf bag cakes too.
Sorry, that's the best comparison I have in my head, because I don't remember seeing any Cat in the Hat cake like you want (except for the challenge).

I love this idea but I'd have to get the teacher's permission on that. The poor lady fell off a ladder and had a pretty major head injury. She's been out for two months (missed her birthday and her favorite day of the year - Dr. Seuss Day) - hence the big party. I'm not sure I'd want to put anything else on her...and there's only about five weeks of school left.
LOL, I just realized a golfish bowl (real or cake or RKT) tumbling off the top of a cat's hat could be a little too ironic for this party. Ugh!
By the way, the pet stores sell plastic fish bowls also (MUCH lighter) I used it for my gumball cake. My avatar has my cat in the hat cake if can give you any ideas ...but truthfully, I LOVE your idea I say go for it and Post pics as soon as you can. I LOVE THE CAT IN THE HAT!

I remember seeing a picture here, and a nice explanation with step by step pictures of a crazy looking cake someone made that seemed to have one ice cream scoop supporting several other layers and I think other gravity-defying pieces. I can't find that now, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm sure the irony would be chuckled at... I'm sure you could do it, but you'd need a structured support system. A strong central dowel and fixed bases. A 3/4" plywood base with a 1/2" dowel sunk in and screwed in from the bottom and a 1/4" plywood base for the bowl that is screwed into the dowel at the top. This will be nice and sturdy and make sure that your cake has no structural stress on it.

chanielisalevy, I love your cake! I've looked at a couple like that here but I think I'll need something smaller. I LOVE how lopsided your hat is! I can't enlarge your picture, though...could you post it or send it to me?
Thanks - I'll try to atach it here. I used rice crispie treats (homemade) and molded it into the right shape, let hardern a bit, then covered in chocolate to help it hold it's shape and then attached with a long skewer into the cake. Then covered in fondant. Voila. Good luch with your cake and show pictures!
