I am making a 3 book (stacked) cake for this sat. Going to bake, tort and frost Friday night- finish all the fondant work on sat.

I have a question- the instructions on here said to use 3 separate pieces for the pages- i thought it might be easier to cover each cake (book) with white fondant first, and then do the colored cover piece on top of that - would that be way too much fondant ya think? I just recently bought "The Mat" so I was figuring i could roll the fondant pretty thin.

Also, as far as support/structure. I bought 3 cake boards (with the laminate or whatever that is sides) - i plan to pair those with the wooden dowels for under each cake. Do you cover your boards with foil or clear wrap?

I'm a total novice in the cake world, this will be my 3rd fondant cake so forgive me if the questions seem dumb lol

I rolled out the top of the grad cap last weekend and it has been drying since. I may have to roll another piece though because I am now worried it is too thin and may break.

oh and anyone that has done the book cake - post your pics, i love looking at them, it is very helpful!

I made a 4-book stack a few months ago (if I weren't so far behind on my posting, I'd show it to you). For some reason - probably because each book was only 1 layer thick - I didn't even think about putting straws or dowels in! That's not a recommendation, by the way, but fortunately nothing untoward happened. I don't see why you couldn't cover the cake in thin white fondant first and then put the covers on. I ran out of fondant for the pages, so I had to make them out of buttercream. It gave the books a kind of rustic look, but wasn't a disaster. It's definitely one of the cakes I've had most fun making. Best of luck with yours!

mine is in my photos- didn't turn out that great. I need to figure out my timing better because i always end up rushing and the end product suffers because of it. But practice makes perfect, this was only my 3rd cake so far.

i have a 3 tier square bday cake to make for 10/15- i am going to bake level and freeze a full week in advance, then work on coloring the fondant, icing, etc in the days leading up.

I also stopped getting notifications on threads...I don't know why.

In June I made a book's cake and it was quite a challenge, and I made a lot of mistakes that I was able to hide. But, of course, people where in uhhhs and aahhs and only another baker would see those mistakes.

Here it is in case you want to take a peak http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2074042 I followed Sharon Zambito's (Sugarshack) dvd.

Hi, all! I just wanted to let you know I finally posted the two stacked book cakes I made this year. I'm still a little shaky on making the spines come out nice, but I was pretty happy with the results. Thanks so much for all your help, cserwa! Here are the links:
