Hey Guys,
After watching all these cake challenges especially the extreme ones, I would love to see some animated cakes made by our very own CCers and perhaps even get some tips on how to do them.
I would love to add this option to my portfolio and I think this will be the next big thing in cakes.
Can't wait to see your cakes!!!!
TIA
I think they look great, but I have no idea how to make anything move. I'm not an electrician or an architect and I don't know any. I would love to see some too though!
I have a cake plate that you can wind up and when you sit the cake on it ....it goes round and round and plays Happy Birthday. Does that count?
I don't think I will be joining this fad. Lots of fun I am sure but I am sticking to my style of baking awesome tasting cakes and decorating them with buttercream so they are easy to serve and taste delicious.
I have a done a few cakes with motors. If you check out my pics the Ace of Cakes Nightmare Cake was for a competition. The motor that was used was actually a windshield wiper motor from a Mustang! If you think about it, motors are used in so many things now.... so basically when you are looking for a motor you need to find something that has enough torque (the strength to pull your heavy cake around) and also something that doesn't spin to fast (you don't want your cake to go flying!). Also something I've done that is so easy and is great for giving small items movement is to use a clock motor embedded in your cake. I have a video you can watch to see how it looks in motion on my cake photo site at www.theclevercake.shutterfly.com
Wow!!!!! Yeastconfection, your cakes are spectacular. I love the subtle movements the clock motor gave your cakes. Amazing work!!!!! Thanks for your tips!
Actually Yeastconfection I do have a question. Do you wrap the motors in anything prior to embedding them in the cake? How do you run wires?
When I am using a clock motor that is battery operated I wrap the motor in plastic wrap and then embed it into the cake. When I used the windshield wiper motor it needed to be mounted under the cake platform - so my brother, who is an awesome wood worker, built me a box to house the motor and batteries (big batteries!). If you are using something that needs to be plugged in you should definitely wrap any wires in a food safe plastic.
I've done quite a few animated cakes. Some battery some plug in. Since its our personal cakes or for friends I don't have to worry about clients since I'm always there to set it up.

Nannuu... your Halloween cake was absolutely awesome. I copied your design idea last Halloween for a work party and everyone was blown away. Of course my electronics and special effects were nowhere near what yours was, but thank you so much for the inspiration. I had a blast making the cake and adding the bells and whistles!
Awesome! Its nice to hear that you liked it that much. That's my favorite cake and also the cake that taught me to watch what I plan because I then have to make it . Do you have any pictures of yours?
I just had to post this. My hubby who tends to be a bit of an inventor thinks that it would be a great idea to make a remote control cake plate. Basically he would make a motorized cake plate that you put a car cake on and when you are done decorating it you cn drive it around. I can just see some kid driving his birthday cake off the dining room table. lol
I went to the hobby store and got a motor for model cars....did it for my tank cake. My brother's an engineer so he slowed it down.
Sorry for the off-topic response, tree45, I LOVE your avatar!!!
No clue on the motors in cakes, but will be saving this thread to possibly attempt down the road.

Here's a picture of it. My electronics were pretty simplistic. I used a strobe light and sound effects inside the haunted house, led lights and a disco ball motor to make some of the figures move. The cake was over 5 feet long. I had a blast making it, and I'm already trying to figure out how I'm going to top it this Halloween.
nannuu... you gotta be kidding! that dragon cake is amazing and the little girl receiving it is the cutest! Wow...
wow.

WOW!!! You are much better at the sugar crafts than we are. That's really cool looking.

Ok, I don't think I need a new topic for this so I'll just add to this post. We just finished an Alice in Wonderland cake for our youngest (6) this weekend. It turned out very nice.
Ha ha, pay no attention to the rectangular simplicity of the cake itself....
Absolutely adorable!!!!! Amazing job! Congrats! i am sure your little one was over the moon!!!
What kind of motors did you use for all the movement???
Coooool...........
Thank you!
It is a combintation of timing motors (found at allelectronics.com or surplus supply places online) and servos.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a video (camera malfunctioned!), but the roulette wheel cake in my photos rotated. I used a rotating Christmas tree stand--it was extremely strong, used to moving heavy weights, and rotated very slowly. We built a raised platform for the cake so that the tree stand could go underneath and spin the wheel. There's a picture that shows the set up.
Love that Alice in Wonderland cake and the Halloween cake!
That's a bummer, I'd like to see a spinning roulette cake.
Thank you for the compliment!
BeeBoos, they did a remote controlled car cake on one of the Ace of Cake episodes and drove it all over the place.
