I love this thread! All of you are very, very talented. I have thought of using cookies a few times, but was afraid to. I am goimg to be doing a huge cake for a friend next month. I am trying to incoporate several things that she loves and I also wanted to honor her job, she places children in special child care. So- the bottom tier I think I am going to using a gingerbread cutter and make the kids circle around, so they'll look like they are holding hands.
I've been doing rolled buttercream forever and I am so ready for a change, so I'm thinking of using Antonia's.
Again- love the talent here - it's inspiring.

This is the first that I've seen this thread- it's very inspiring! You all have done wonderful jobs with the cookie cake decorations I'm going to have to try it sometime soon.

OK, I was also inspired, my s-i-l asked me to make the cake for my nieces college graduation (for 80 people) nevermind that I only bake bday cakes for the kids and have never done such a huge project. I searched all over and found one with royal icing roses I liked and thought I could do, but then I thought...wait I'm trying to make a go of this cookie thing, why mess with icing roses, I'll just use cookies. So here it is, unfinished, the party is tomorrow and hour drive, so the topper, grad caps, year and diploma cookies are all on lollipop sticks and I'll add them when we get there, I'll also post a new pic. But I'm so pleased with how it came out, had to share.
I like using cookies on cakes also. When I am putting my cookies on cakes, I use buttercream to decorate the cookie instead of cookie icing, so I can get a dimension to it. This cake I did last Thanksgiving and was trying to use different techniques. The turkey is a cookie.

OK, so after being inspired by this thread. I created my youngest son's First birthday cake and decorated it with cookies. I had so much fun and I find myself wondering "why didn't I think of this before?" So, here it is.....

Hi everyone, I'm back from Chicago for my middle daughter's college graduation, and I'm happy to report that cookie cake #2 made it all the way to Chicago as well! I love the other cookie inspired cakes that have been posted...they are all beautiful. Boy, they sure are time consuming though, aren't they! Oh well, the price we pay for our loved one's happy faces. Here's the latest addition to the cookie cake gallery. I will post it in the cookie gallery with alternate cookie pics. TFL. (I'd have to resize again to post here, and am too lazy lol)
My twin sons and a couple of their friends all have birthdays this month or next, so they decided to throw a party. I heard them discussing the menu and who was going to be supplying what. One of their friends asked where they should buy the cake. There was a pause, then from one of my sons said, "You BUY your cake?". They asked me to make the cake, and I decorated it with lots of cookie candles. I wasn't going to post a picture of the cake because I thought I over-decorated it (I hate decorating chocolate cakes), but all the kids at the party raved about it, so here it is:
Must be the morning for posting yet MORE cookies on cakes! lol Yours is
wonderful...not overdecorated at ALL! I'll bet the boys loved it and they probably loved the fact that they could actually eat the decorations!! I love all the colors of the candles.
Joanne, loved your cake! I must've posted my gnome cookies immediately after you posted your cake, because your photo is right after mine in the slideshow. Cool!

Thanks guys!! I've realized however, that I'm really not into the "cake" part that much, but for family...we'd do anything. Right!!
I know i said this before but i'm really impressed with all your cakes.
GeminiRJ, how did you get the candles at the top to stand up?
my sister does cookie cakes and gets so many orders for them. They look like fun..... these samples are beautiful!!

Ok.... Where is this Peggy Karr website/??? I tried to google it, but no luck. I would LOVE to see a tuscan villa. I sell gingerbread house kits at christmas, and I find that the unusual styles sell the best. I'd love to get some inspiration!!!!
