Around here there are lots of wedding receptions which are catered by the family, therefore it is not uncommon that they have some items purchased from a club store.

My family does it all the time. We have a multi-cultural, multi-religious family. There isn't a caterer in town who will accommodate our flavors and dietary restrictions, so we end up catering our own events. Because we don't buy their caterer's food, we end up providing all our own plates, etc. What starts out as a great family gathering turns into an indoor picnic. But hey, at least we're all healthy, happy, and able to be together.

My wedding was done for about $5000.00 and I got my wedding dress ( in the prom section on a 90% off rack for $35 and no taxes for the tax free day and shoes for $20. My cakes was bought by a friend that her MIL made for us for free, just a simple 3 tier basket weave cake. I added roses to it. My candles I bought with my 50% coupons at HL and anythiing else I needed I went to HL everyday with my coupon in hand and my fiance had his too. I bought 10 rolls of ribbons $5, tule bags for birdseed and candies 100pcs $12, tiara $11 on Ebay. We took pictures at Sears for our Thank you cards $40 and we made music CD's $25 for our guests. Pictures were taken by my BIL who used his Cannon semi professional camera, We had our wedding and reception at the Hotel, 2 banquet rooms, 2 nights stay in a suite, plus the sandwich meat, cheese trays, vegetables, fruit, nuts and chips, punch and small o'hordurves, nothing fancy for total of $1200. My fiance's suit and our childrens dresses 2, and suit 1 was a total of $250.00. We bought our flower's for all of the tables, confetti and our bouques and snack foods v at Sam's for a total of $150. My sister and I stayed up to make all of the flowers the night before ( More like she stayed up and did them ) and they really turned out beautiful and had a week cruise, my fiance found online, to Mexico and 2 night stay in New Orleans, All this and the honeymoon for all to the tune of about $5000. It was very nice, nothing to fancy. The main thing was we wanted to get married but did not have a lot of money so we compromised on a lot of things but I probably would do it again all over. Why spend thousands and thousand of dollars to impress who?

I applaud them for not spending an insane amount of money on a 1 day event. Very smart of them to be frugal and save their money for possibly more important things. I think my only complaint about that set-up was that the red solo cups probably didn't coordinate with the paper plates and napkins. icon_lol.gif

Seriously, doesn't sound at all to me like they were trying to be cheap or chintzy... and putting on a larger affair than what they could afford. Bravo!

ETA: NOT saying that that's what you were implying. At all. And to answer your question, no I haven't been to any weddings lately that were costco weddings, but then again i haven't been to a wedding in years icon_lol.gif

We had a cheap wedding too ok it was 17yrs ago hehe oh how the time has flown by hehe... but we did it for aroudn $3K nz dollars of course... my cake wa sa 2 tier pillared cake with silk flowers(yuk) on it from a bakery for $100, my grandmother, mother and I made my wedding dress, my grandmother made one of the bridesmaids dresses and the maid of honor made her own. we got married and had the reception at my parents place and we ate off our knees from plastic plates although it was catered but only cost us $15 as my folks supplied a pig on the spit. my flowers from a florist cant remember the cost and the suits we hired but was cheap, photos by a family friend that we ended up with very few as were blurred or he had used the same roll of film more than once, another family friend videoed it as our original guy cancelled on us so friend stepped up thankfully. we didnt have wedding cars was no need, family friend is a hairdresser so she did my hair, and even to this day we get told what an awesome wedding it was and they have never forgotten i mean after all we made my hubbies gran cry and she never cries at weddings hehe. We didnt have a honeymoon as such we had 2nights at a motel was nice but allwe could afford... so for me we are gonna renew our vows on our 20th anniv and do quite a bit different ie professional photographer eat at a table hehe and at a nice venue cause we can afford to now.

So really who cares where you get all your bits and pieces for your big day as long as you enjoy it and the focus is the wedding ceremony after all. so good on them for not going over their budget i commend them.

sorry hope i havent hijacked this thread hehe but just wanted to show that you can have an awesom day even on a really low budget.

I just wanted to say this is a great way to make everyone feel welcome and "part of the family". It is a graceful way of not making anyone feel like their family's traditions/religious dietary laws don't matter.

I agree with everyone that a wedding shouldn't be about having the right materials things (dress, flowers, even cake), but instead should be about launching the new couple into their new life, accompanied by those who will be there to laugh with them, cry with them, and support them emotionally in the future. If you want to do that with a large crowd, in a flashy and flamboyant way, and can afford it, great. If you want to have 20 of your best friends and relatives, the Justice of the Peace, and a pot-luck, then that is what you should do.

To be honest, I remember very little about my wedding reception 22 years ago. I know who was there and that my mother and I made the food, we hired college students to serve, and that my dad got the cake from a baker he knew. I don't remember what the cake looked like, nor what food we had. I do remember staying up the night before tying little ribbons with our names on them onto little mesh bags filled with Jordan almonds. We thought they were so classy with the personalized ribbon dh's stepmother printed for us.

A wedding isn't supposed to be about the amount of money spent. It's about the two people getting married and how much they love one another and want to spend the rest of their lives together. It's sharing that love with friends and family that make the day special...not how much money was spent. sorry just my two cents worth.

Well everything i heard here sounds better than my wedding,I was ill at that period and we could never agree on anything .But at the end of the day,I didn't even have a cake,I did my own hair,we didn't have a reception,BIL took the photographs (well we were only about 14),no honeymoon.Registry and straight home.
Was it upsetting for me.........yes a little bit.
Would I do it again................under those same circunstances YES most definitely.
Do I envy people with big weddings...yes.
Am I happy.............WITHOUT A DOUBT.
But now I'm very happy,I'm the envy of my friends that are still paying the debts they incurred while trying to impress. It's the life after that counts.

I think the bride probably got a good discount on her wedding items since she works at Costco & Good for her. Just like people who work at Wally World having a Wally World wedding. Nothing wrong with that.

These days it seems like in order to get married, if you're not in the upper class, you either have to save up, put yourself in debt to have a nice wedding, or do just like the bride here did and be thrifty. I applaud the bride & groom. All that matters is that they're happy. Plus they probably saved enough money to have an awesome honeymoon, right? I have never been to an all-Costo wedding before, but I have been to some thrifty ones and YES they were all very nice. I've actually seen big budget weddings that were tackier than any thrifty wedding I've been to. lol

This thread reminds me of what I was told about my parent's wedding. They eloped to Maryland - no reception, no cake, just the priest, a nun, and another priest as their witnesses. Their marriage lasted 'til death parted them, way longer than some others in my family, a few of which did not even last a year.

I've reread the OP's post 3 times and I'm still trying to figure out what your point is icon_confused.gif

I'm happy to see that SOME people ARE actually living within their means.

Who cares where they buy their wedding things from, do you think that people that spend 100k on a wedding will have a better marriage?

My boss just got married. Cake & flowers from Costco. Centerpieces & tableware from the dollar tree. She was very happy that she was getting married and not spending a ton. She makes a good salary. She could have done whatever she wanted. I saw the pictures...everything looked really nice. Most important she is happy.

On the other hand I have a friend who has been engaged for the last 3 years because she wants a huge wedding with over 200 guest and the whole nine yards...at the least $10,000. She makes $40,000 a year....do you see where I'm going. LOL!

That's exactly what I was thinking...what difference does it make to the OP how or what they did their wedding and/or reception with or where it was purchased? This was about the Bride and Groom. You were invited to share their joy, not to criticize things to death.

Don't you think that you have tried to stir up enough trouble for one day? This will be my one and only post on a thread where you are involved, and I suggest that other people might consider the same idea. I feel really sad saying that because I have really enjoyed chatting on CC. But the drama the last few weekends is having a profound effect on the other members of this site, and it shouldn't have been this way.

OK ....... my observation for today!!

Why do people register on a Cake Decorating forum - that is SUPPOSED to be about 'sharing' ideas etc AND mostly cake related things ..... seem to spend their whole time on things NOT cake related.

Is it just co-incidence that the ONLY person posting on this thread that has NO PHOTOS posted is the person stirring the pot?

I'm wondering why this person is causing so much stink over stupid stuff... snooty much? geez!

There wasn't much point of your post. I didn't spend but about $200 or so when my husband and I got married almost 9 years ago. It was me, him, and the officiant at a gazebo on the side of a mountain in Eureka Springs, AR. I'm no less married than someone who spent $2000, $20,000, or $200,000. So what if the bride and groom did their whole wedding with products from Costco? I think they're pretty smart to save their money where they can. All that matters is that they are happy together. A wedding is just ONE day.

Grow UP!

Come now, I'm sure the OP has reasons aplenty to be offended by someone else's wedding:

Maybe she was upset because the gift she'd bought the happy couple had come from Sam's Club, so she was worried it wouldn't fit in with the theme. icon_razz.gif

Maybe she was hoping a wedding invite from her neighbor would include a lavish meal, open bar, and some cute single guy picking her up. But she didn't get a date, so she needs to blame it on cheap cutlery to help her ego.

Maybe she's trying really hard to be a good, important troll, but just can't get it down yet. Better luck next time!
