Tirechic....also, I think I see something you are doin that that frustrated the heck out of me. When my tip wasn't close enough to the surface of the cake, the scroll would get pulled out of round, and the curve would crooked. Like the icing you are piping pulled away from the surface and sort of fell flat....if that makes sense. Keep very close to the surface, touching almost.

omgoodness! 50 DOZEN.. geez & i thought i hadn't slept in the past 3 days!! icon_surprised.gif

& btw: while we're talking 'banes of our existence'..
mine is the flippin castle cake.
that wilton kit seems like such a good idea, but their execution of the product isn't good at all.. I had my hubby drill a hole in each one for a skewer, but some of them cracked (on the seams) when he did it so it's still not a great solution.. I mean... you have 3-4 inches of skewer in that much cake, but 8" above it on a hope & a prayer. even with icing & such at the base, I still always have ONE leaning tower.. just one.. always one. ;o)

Add that kit onto a request for my 'disco hippie' cake (like in my avi) & it makes for a LONG night! it probably also has something to do with the fact that my cakes are probono/gifts/donationish reimbursement only. It might not be so frustrating once i can charge properly...

since this is a pretty "live" thread....

making my first recipe of Choc BC tomorrow

I was going to use Sugar shacks BC and add chocolate powder, and use vanilla flavoring.... any idea how much of each to add? Should I use a chocolate based coffee creamer? I do 5lbs ps, 2.25 lbs high ratio, and 3 tablespoons of flavoring usaully..

Or should I go and melt chocolate bars and mix in?

It doesn't need to be crusting..... but I would rather it does.

aw! i *love* the baby & agree top block!

& re: buttercream, i've used chocolate milk in place of regular before (either nesquick already made or i mix some up) & i personally think that melted choc makes a much smoother bc (i use a recipe from southern living mag that i *LOVE*)

Ok, baby on the top it is. I hadn't noticed until I placed the baby on there, but the top of the top block has "Zz" on it anyway. Here's the finished cake.

It is so funny that this is for one of DH's HS girlfriends. He had a ton of them, so I can't refuse their orders or I'd not have many. J/K...sort of. icon_lol.gif

i finally decided to do a square cake w/the monkey sitting on top.. the 'bearmonkey' is out of the oven.. it looks like it will be awhile for the 9x9...

my g/f suggested a pink monkey.. & for every though i get that says she's a nut, i get another one that says "but that might be cute".. lol. .i won't be icing till tomorrow.. i mean.. later today ;o) i was planning to do leaves on the base.. & had thought about doing the base in pink.. but that with green leaves on it might look a bit wierd...
i hate choosing colors!

mrsbriggs06, pink and green are great colors together. You just have to get your shades right. I like a good pastel pink with like a kelly green

my search on CC doesn't work from my pc for some stupid reason but here's some pretty pink and green combo I found on the web:

My first Chocolate WASC cakes are baking - a 10" and an 8". Not entirely sure of baking times because different sources vary a bit. But think I can get it close.

Will do fondant and peanut butter bc tomorrow. Simple deco - going with just heart, diamond, spade and club cutouts on black, red and white fondant. Haven't decided final design yet. Keeps changing in my mind!

thanks!

i'm pulling my idea from http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_42771.html
i guess i'm not sure if i should ice just the top in pink, the the sides in green *to prevent cake from showing thorough* then pipe on the leaves or what...

i'll probably throw some flowers on there, too.. maybe a head band or something like that on the monkey.. i was thinking gumpaste letters or a gp #2, though the last time i made one & tried to stand it up, it broke..

i guess this is what happens when you let a 2y/o decide ;o) i WAS going to do a pillow cake.. or a punk rock black & pink cake.. or an imagination movers drum kit.. but no.. i get a monkey lovin lil girl whose bday cake is #3 of my 5 cakes this weekend ;o)

edited to fix link.. & add that:
OMG. i just leveled my bearmonkey.. and i have found THE BEST sell your soul & slap your momma chocolate cake! it's crazy moist and sooooooooooooooooooo yummy! i wanna hack that lil bearmonkey up, eat the evidence and just make a square cake!!

taking a break from my birthday cake, plus a small cake for my service advisor...

my cake is alternating torted layers of chocolate fudge and strawberry cake with champagne filling, milk chocolate ganache filling and strawberries, with strawberry buttercream. Topped with pink-and-white royal icing lilies.

did I mention I have a sprained ankle too?

service advisor's cake is vanilla with chocolate buttercream.

Cakes are frozen and thawing. Fillings are made (although my ganache is a bit grainy - I whipped it last night - never done that before - and I'm not happy with the initial mouth feel). Strawberries are thawing. Nothing is due until tomorrow, so I may not do anything else. Cake for service advisor is due in morning, my cake not until 7pm.

Lillies are made and painted, just need to figure out what, if anything, I'm going to do for stamens, since I hate using anything that's not edible.

Okay, turned on my oven light in time to see the center sink in the 8". Should I have used a core in that one, too? I have a flower nail in the 10".

Tortess, was this a WASC? Was it the 8in x 3in?

I find that with some recipes you do need a flower nail, even if it's just your standard 8in, and I definitely need it on my 8x3.

...and just as I said to DH, "Well, the 10" is for tomorrow, so..." I turned around and watched the 10" sink in the middle, too. Now what?

I bake my WASC in 2" pans and don't use a flower nail, so I don't know what to tell you, sorry. I bake them @ 325* until done. Which is sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes longer.

Got my cakes stacked, got by fondant ribbon wrapped, waiting for jewels to set up a bit before I pop them out of mold. Waiting for gumpaste banner to dry so I can paint Happy Birthday on it....probably need to roll out some more whimsy roses....make the poodle leash....almost done! Will probably do hardly of any of that and wait until morning...lol!

ok so tired and have a headache and not the best for baking. I'm making like my 7th belly cake. Gosh, I wish people would quit asking!

So, I'm taking my small Wondermold pan out of the oven with my two 'boobs'. Catch the pan on the countertop, drop the pan and it flips and lands upside down, squished boob everywhere. And then stupid me, who knows the pan is hot, that I just took it out of the oven with oven mitts, I try to pick up 350 degree cake and pan off the floor with my bare hands. Yikes!

Luckily I have more than enough batter left to refill those puppies, but now I will definitely be awake another 45 minutes minimum.

I've been trying to make a 6 in and a 8 in cake in my mom's kitchen since yesterday. And I have none of my STUFF and it SUCKS!!! A+@)$ As does her oven. Luckily its just for a "wedding cake design" class at the local comm college, but I wanted a sweet portofolio pic. icon_sad.gif Guess not.

I ran out of frosting. Gah. I need to stop eating it!!! I made 2 batches. Hubby offered to run to the store to pick up butter for me, but it's too late for me to run my mixer. So, it waits until tomorrow. Thankfully one of our events was canceled so I have roughly 4 hours free to finish my cupcakes. I have probably an hours worth of work left.

Well, after finding the thread I saw recently about my problem, I suspect my oven isn't baking at true temp. So I will get a thermometer. This is my first semi-scratch cake, so I have learned a ton. And it was the first time using my new Magic Line pans - I'm in love!!

Apparently it's on its 11th year. I'm not too impressed. I think there's CCers who could do a better job!!

Ok 1:30am and I just finished 150 +/- cake truffle pops for a charity tea on Sunday. I'm having trouble counting. Tomorrow I'm working on covering the styrofoam cones in fondant (to put the pops in) and a dummy tea cup cake for display...oh and I still need to make sugar flowers. The words are starting to blurr....sooo Goodnight all.
