hello all i am a lurking newbie. i am doing my first set of cookies. and im a little currious is to how everyone puts there icing on? i have heard of diffrent ways to do it but not sure what is the easiest and best way to get a smooth outcome. sorry if this question has already been asked it took me forever to figure out where to post thanks for your help in advance. you all do such wonderful work
I outline my cookies first with a medium stiff royal icing and then go back and thin down the icing to flood the cookies in.If you are using fondant then you lightly brush the cookie with a simple syrup mix or water and glue the fondant piece on top.The thinned down version of royal icing used to flood with is this...add tiny amounts of water and stir until you can drop the icing back into intself and it disappears into the icing after 10 seconds. If you add too much water ..add icing sugar back in.It should be the consistency of Elmers white glue or a bit looser but not much.

Cake Central Acronyms

Another warm welcome! I use pastry bags - one with RI that disappears back into the icing in about 7 seconds to do my outlining and a second bag with the same color in which the RI disappears back in about 10 seconds for my flooding. However, sometimes the cookie gods are happy and I can by with the same consistency for both. I usually flood just about right away after outlining so that it melds together, but you can outline in a different color, let dry and then flood for a nice affect. It all depends on what look you are going for. Again, welcome to our little (slightly addictive!) world!
I use an off set spatula to put my base coat of royal icing on my cookies. I let them dry and then decorate with various bags filled with icing and different tips. I had read about using the medium icing to outline and then fill in with a looser icing, but I had small kids at home and need to get a move on. I found that I could control the icing with the spatula and received the same outcome. Just make sure the icing is wet enough that it floods in the spatula marks.
i have my outline in a pastry bag and my flood in a sqeeze bottle (for food only, wilton has some for candy that are readily available in walmart or michael's).
i do the same as tracy, i flood just after i outline so i get a seamless effect between the outline and flood.
i use a food only paintbrush or an offset spatula if i need to push the flood around. which one i use depends on the shape of the cookie.
i have also been known to use the nose of my squeeze bottle to push it when i am in a pinch, lol.
Yep - I to do ALL of the above So I have nothing to add - but I DID wanna say "WELCOME" Home! Hope to see ya around (and we will - because as TracyLH said .. it can be slightly addictive!!)
Good luck and take lots of pics!

Mine too! I thought my husband was the only one with a mind like that, haha! I was going to put that as my screen name, cakepornaddict, but I thought people might get the wrong idea of me, hehe!
Glad to hear others are addicted as I am! My DH and I actually went out of the country recently and had very limited internet access. When we finally did get on-line, I popped onto CC really quickly and he just rolled his eyes at me.
