How much do you charge for having to buy things for a cake (such as plates, pillars, fountains) that you had to get specifically for a cake?
I have a couple who wants stairs and a fountain, so I had to buy the fountain, stairs, pillars and plates, that I may never use again!
Hope this is quick enough!
Thats a hard one: you can't charge your customer for those things on basis that you bought them just for her, since you will reuse for more customers. I would call a few places who rent these things (or a local cakeshop might rent to decorators) and ask what their rental price is.
I would charge your customer the rental rate plus a tiny bit more (to cover the expense of using it less than the average renter who probably gets use out of a fountain every other weekend this time of year!)
Hope that helps...
oh I just remembered, Earlene's cake site as well as a few others on the web might have rental rates for delivery online. You could cross reference those. I'd help you but I don't know what sizes you would be using, etc... I would Google the type of fountain you are buying and see what people are renting them for... again, use that as basis for her
"piece of the price of having to buy it".
I'm sort of in your spot too. I just bought a bunch of stuff for a wedding cake I'm doing for a friend -- BUT, I will be using it again, most of it is actually stuff that I've been wanting & just needed an excuse to buy lol.
Maybe tell them you would be happy to add the extras for them, but anything beyond the basic support system (look up info on sps) they would need to provide, because it is not something you are able to do. So unless you are making enough $$$ on the cake to pay for the stuff AND still make it worth your while, I would otherwise just tell them that it is probably best if they look elsewhere.
Another quick thought - if you do find a place to rent the stuff from, make sure to charge them a deposit equal to what YOU would have to pay to the rental place if they fail to return it to you...
perhaps you can rent them out after too. and no doubt that style will come again, one day. im surprised to hear someone wants that.
