I was recently at a home and garden show and bought a racheting pruner to cut dowels with. It cuts through them like butter with no splinters. Here's a link to their web site if anyone is interested http://www.syndicate-sales.com/pruningcenter1/item.nhtml?profile=pruningcenter1&UID=102 I had a pair of offset pruners but they didn't cut straight across and weren't near as easy to use as these are and they also caused a little splintering.

We also got a bigger one and it cuts off large tree limbs effortlessly. They have a lifetime gurantees and you can buy replacement blades for them icon_smile.gif
