I'm so sorry that this happened to you. Sadly its not uncommon. My husband is a fishing guide and we have had several people from out of town come fishing with us and write us a check. Then they go home and put a stop payment on it. They can do that even if we have already deposited the check. We don't find out for a week or two when the bank sends us notification in the mail. I'd love for someone to call me! Its happened to us so many time our policy now is if you are writing a check you have to send it before your trip....no funny business! I did speak to a lawyer about it and theres not much worth doing unless the amount is over $1000 and the you can go for grand larsony (i think thats what its called) No matter what NO CAKE FOR HER!

I read this earlier and I had the feeling that she intentionally did this to try to get a free cake. And if she doesn't make payment you should definately contact other vendors and take her a$$ to court. icon_evil.gif

wanted to add: Even if it's not worth the $$ to take her to court, I would still do it just to tie her precious newly wedded a$$ up in court. Let her have a good clear horrible memory of her first year of marraige.

sweetcake, that's a very good suggestion.

I'm the one that floated the cancellation theory. Frankly, I don't really believe it, just trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Even though that most certainly doesn't make any difference in the fact that she needs to be paid in FULL!

The more I think about it, the more it ticks me off for you! lol

I really think she was calling the night before to verify that you were coming, what time, etc. because she was putting this plan into action. She knew full well she was going to call the next morning and stop payment. She waited til the last possible minute to do so, thinking you'd be too busy with the cake and delivery to find out. Dirty, dirty.

If I'm wrong, I really want to know what other reason would possess her to stop payment. Unless, it was in error or...I don't even know...

Hold that cake hostage!

(Did you get any money before this payment? I hope you got something for your time and supplies...)

lol maybe just leave a peice of cake on a plate, on the table all pretty and set up, but wait till ppl start showing for the reception, so that a least a few ppl know, and will find out what kind of person she is. It would spread like wildfire, and by the time the bride came up to her "beautiful 6 or 7 tier cake" and all that is there is a slice, she will start crying and be upset, and everyone in that place will completely know what she did!!!...........(waking up from day dream) oh well. That sounds good and evil, but there is no way in a million years i could do that, your the better person, take the high road, and see her in small claims.

even better, cut piece of the cake, then take a photo of the cake, and cake piece, frame the 8x 10 , and then put the photo of the piece on a plate, and leave alittle note that says enjoy, along with the posting of the cancelled check, and the court summons.

Good idea, sweetcake! That would hopefully stop her from trying to blame you. They would ALL know that she stopped payment and that is has not been paid for. It would be their option whether they want cake or not.

I had a bride order 1 week before the Sunday wedding. She kept putting off paying for it, said it would be Thursday, then Friday when she brought the flowers by. Friday she said she wanted to pay via paypal. Send her an invoice never received payment. Saturday afternoon I called the MOB and explained the situation and how she may have overlooked the payment. The MOB sent over a check (made me really nervous but I didn't know what to do) so I took it and as soon as the bank opened on Monday I cashed it at her bank. Never heard anything, but at least I got paid and she got her cake.

Having worked in the financial industry, I can tell you that the person at the bank shouldn't get in trouble for telling you about the stop payment. It's your account so you are entitled to any information about anything that happens in your account. If she was giving you information about your client's account, that's a different story, but it doesn't sound like that's what happened.

If you're still unable to contact the client, I would contact the venue and ask if they have an alternate phone number for her. I would also let them know why you are asking. Make sure that you are speaking with a manager so that they can check to ensure that if they received any payments last minute, they can call their bank to verify that no stop payments were placed on them as well. A venue could lose tens of thousands of dollars from something like that. Plus, most payments made to them for open bars and such, will be made after the event, so they may want to ask for a credit card or guaranteed funds. I would tell them the whole story!
