okay I have returned to my desk for the moment......jus to clarify banking stuff...our bank has a policy that even if the checks are from the same bank and funda may be "credited" to an account that funds can still be "recalled" up to five business days after depositing ...it's kinda like a NSF.

Anyways, venue rep goes to salon and hands the bride the faxed notice, bride apparently gets really flustered and says she can only pay $250 and can pay the rest next week....

venue rep tells her that there is no way she is going to ask me to deliver the cake with only $250 in hand...she said she could "loan" her a cake dummy ( one of mine they keep for display set ups actually) for pictures and could get her a sheet cake from walmart but it still wouldnt be enough to serve 350 people......

so bride does not call me back but MOB calls and is completely irrate

and tells me " I cannot believe you are withhoding my daughters cake on the most important day of her life, how dare you, do you not have aheart" me"of course I have a heart, but i also have a mortgage payment and a kid to feed, I am sorry but I cannot allow someone to take advantage of me and try to get a cake without paying in full for it."

I went on to explain that there is still time for them to have their cake all they have to do is pay the venue rep the cash amount owed on the cake. MOB does not like this and says that it is ridiculous to have to pay $1100 for a wedding cake and that is why her daughter stopped payment on the check. I told MOB that for 350 people $1100 wqas not outrageous but cheaper than she would have gotten her cake anywhere else. ( this comes out to roughly 3.15 a serving and the cake is detailed and has tonns of sugarpaste flowers)

So after many explicits she says they will just take their deposit back and I can keep my F'N cake.

At this point I have had enough...so i tell her to review their contract that there is no refund available because it is prior to two weeks before date and the event was not cancelled and they are in the wrong and not me and my contracts were written by a lawyer and will stand up in court.

So NO CAKE for them...oh well

I am taking the largest teir to the venue rep tomorrow for them to eat and then the rest is going to our churchs easter picnic on sunday

Okay gotta get back to work on my friends cake for tomorrow ...which she paid in full for three months ago!

I too am curious to find out what happened.

It definitely sounds like she intentionally stopped payment to get a cheap cake. Very, very bad.

And how do you stop payment on a check if it's already been paid?

Time to call the DA and the police...MOB confirmed check fraud!!!!

And if you take her to small claims court, you can set it up so that if you win, she pays all the court costs.

*shrug*

Either way, I'm sorry you had to deal with such jerks today. I think you handled yourself beautifully and came out looking much better than the bride or the MOB.

Good job!!

I've been watching and reading this thread for the past few hours, and all I can say is WOW, THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I paid too much for my car, does that mean I don't have to pay the rest of the loan?!?!? lmaoooooooooo

It peeves me to no end to hear about all these people that think they can get away with stuff like this!!!

Edited to Add:
Forgot to say WAY TO GO to you for standing up for yourself and enforcing your policies!

MOB is sooooooo stupid. If you could not afford the cake then why order it. In fact why invite 350 people to your wedding. No cake I agree. They meant putting a stop hold on the cake as was hoping you did not find out and not pay you the different. Good ridding for them. I cannot believe what their intention, they are cruel and a disagrace.

Ah, cool. An update. That's what I get for not refreshing before I post.

That is insane. And now I'm wondering if MOB didn't put the bride up to this, since she sounds like a piece of work and the bride was so flustered.

I think you handled it well. I'm sorry you had to deal with all of this.

It sounds like the bride was fine with the price of the cake and then MOB threw a fit.

Tell them to start opening some envelopes from their guests...

If they thought $1100 was too much for the cake, they should have never ordered it and put any of you through all this. And you want the deposit back? HA! How 'bout I write a check for it and then call the bank to cancel it! Oh, you don't like that idea ... don't think that's fair ... neither do I! Ugh! I'm having one of those "I hate people" days.

Sorry you went to all that trouble for her. I hope the venue charges her a rental fee for your dummy, too!

This whole thing blows my mind.

Even little children know that you have pay for things and that the cost isn't based on how much you have in your pocket.

Kudos to you for not letting them have their cake and eat it, too! icon_biggrin.gif

Wow icon_eek.gif I hope the venue has been paid in full and not with a personal check.

Please don't accept personal checks as final payment in the future.....especially 4 days before the wedding. My final payment has to be made by certified check or cash........no exceptions.......3 weeks prior to wedding date.

Sorry this happened to you, $550 is a lot of money to lose. This totally sucks. There are some real classless losers in this world. icon_sad.gif

It crossed my mind that the bride might think the amount she was paying for the cake was too much and that this is how she'd get around paying for it. In her mind she paid you more than enough for "just cake". But then I thought, no, nobody would be that underhanded. Sigh.

WOW. Just WOW.

Haha, hopefully MOB nailed the bride's coffin shut on this case.

You simply MUST take her to small claims court. What she did to you was despicable, and you deserve full compensation for making that cake plus additional money for her trying to intentionally screw you. I am the kind of person that would file charges and take this as far as possible. Her actions were completely INTENTIONAL.

Thieving [insert ugly word here]!!

icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif What a rude MOB!!!!! Goodness, the day before the wedding is a little late to decide your wedding cake cost's too much. Of course you have a heart, but how many people do you know that would "donate" $550 to a stranger so they can have a nice wedding cake! Who in their right mind would think a business person is wrong and heartless to not deliver a product that hasn't been paid for?

The really sad thing is that the MOB probably thinks THEY were the injured party! Clueless. I'm not one to run to a lawyer, but in this case, I'd be checking to see who is the biggest shark attorney I could hire!

Again, I'm sure sorry you were put through this, but you handled it right. I'd be curious to know how they cover for having no big formal cake at the reception for 350. Too bad the MOB didn't realize much earlier that her dd had agreed/contracted for $1100 worth of cake they couldn't afford. Sounds like the bride learned well from her mother. I just hope they didn't have this affair catered for another big chunk of cash they can't pay.

I hope their guests don't mind twinkies!!

Nooo way!!!! she intentionally stopped payment on the check!!! yikesss!!! and these whole time (I've read the whole thread) I had FAITH on her...I wanted to believe that a bride would not pull a scam on her own wedding...
She needs to hear the song that says ---'God is watching us, God is watching us...from a distance'And the MOB had the nerve to open her big mouth and get nasty with you....
Wow, the more you live the more you learn.

I'm sorry dsevans that you had to go through this...but, believe me everybody gets what they deserve.
....she called you the day before to verify everything icon_eek.gif ..she gave you a check... icon_eek.gif

I'm sorry this happened to you!

I try not to judge, but this one is way too much! I truly cannot believe what some people try to get away with. Do they not know they are hurting others by doing things like this? Do they think it's right for them to decide AFTER agreeing to a contract and AFTER placing the order, to then just turn around and make up their own rules? They thought they could change the price on you and that you would just roll over backward and let them take advantage of all your hard work by having a beautiful cake too - the nerve!

I think you handled it perfectly and with grace - good for you!

I feel a sense of pride that OP stood her ground and stood up to these thieves. I'm so sorry she is out the other half of her money but still:

Fabulous Caker: 1, SnakeBridezilla and ZillaMom: 0

The nerve of that mother. If you can't afford a cake to feed 350, maybe you should've cut down that hefty guest list. Good luck getting those sheet cakes from Walmart.

OP, your church is surely in for a treat! Please post pictures of this infamous cake.

This probably wont be the last you hear from 'Zillas.
