My Cake Looks Like *^@#, Due @ 4
Decorating By pipe-dreams Updated 30 Mar 2009 , 10:38pm by sweetcravings
This is my first FBCT, which turned out ok. Except I had already iced my cake in pure white icing, b/c I didn't realize FBCT takes butter. So the colors are a little off, b/c I didn't outline them, I just spread it on
So overall it looks like dookie..the decorations, the writing..I'm just not on my game today. It's due in 3 hours. Is there anything I can do to make it look better?
I still have to clean up the edges, but I still think it's crappy. I don't even want to give it to the customer.
Its not that bad honestly. Just put a nice boarder on it and it should look better. Good luck.
I think it looks great! Once you clean up the edges and put a border on it will look alot better. I see what you mean about the different icing color..I think once the border is on it won't be so noticeable
I think it looks great! We are our own worst enemies when it comes to critiquing (sp) our own cakes.
Pipe a border on and your good to go!!
I would put a top and bottom border on it to make it look more finished but other than that, I think it looks great. The kids will love it. Sometimes if you try to change anything, it looks overworked. I wouldn't even worry about the white being a slightly different color. I personally don't think it's that noticeable.
I'm not really seeing what you are talking about. It looks good to me. Like the pp said, it just needs a border.
I see what you mean but the color difference doesn't really bother me. I think once you get the border on it will neaten it up quite a bit.
Sometimes I will use the same color icing for the border because it will finish off the cake without drawing attention to any irregular edges I might have. You might try that and see how it looks with just a white border.
Other than the border, I think the cake looks great. Great job with your first FBCT, they can be a bit tricky and you did a super job!
Oh yeah, forgot to say one other thing.
After you get the border on there....STEP AWAY FROM THE CAKE!!!
I have to tell myself that all the time, when I think something doesn't look right or it's missing something, I will start fussing with it until I completely mess it up.
My motto now is...Step away from the cake!!!!
The customer will love it!
Great job on the FBCT. They look great. I agree that the border will make a big difference. Sometimes, when I don't like the way my lettering looks, I will put dots on each one at all the points. Looks cute, expecially on a kids cake. Also, if you have any curling ribbon, it might look cute between the two designs, may the blue, yellow and purple all curled together and just lay across the middle. Just thowing out some ideas for you. HTH
I agree, a border will take care of it. I t doesn't look like dookie! The FBCTs are very good and the different colors not a problem.
"Perhaps" a border to separate the 2 designs?
But really, if you do too much it will muck it up.
(I know this because sometimes I don't know when to stop!)
edited to add
projectqueen - you said it much better than I
AND you're a faster keyboarder!
i agree with everyone else, your cake looks great, just add your borders, and it will be fine,
as the pp said after that be sure to step away from the cake, let it go,
and all will be fine,
After you get the border on there....STEP AWAY FROM THE CAKE!!!
Probably one of the best pieces of advice on CC!!!
Step back and take a break - then add your border. Your cake looks great! You'll be surprised at how much better you feel when your done.

You did a great job! Your FBCT are amazing. I know how hard it is to do the Transformers and yours looks great. I am positive she'll like it.
Your cake looks great. It's true, we are our worst critic! The things we think are big mess-ups, others don't even notice it like us. Good job!
You are being too hard on yourself. Your FBCTs are fabulous! And the borders really bring it all together and finish it nicely. You might not be completely satisfied with it and it might not be your best work (just a generalization, not a comment about your work, no offense intended). We all have off days or designs that we arent too excited about. You just have to keep going and keep looking forward to that next cake!
Just wanted to say that the borders look great and were just what the cake needed.
Glad you stepped away
Let us know what the customer says when she picks it up, I'm sure she's going to love it.
Well, I delivered it a few hours ago. She was very nice, and said she loved it. She even gave me a tip, so I guess you all were right! Thanks for the encouragement!
I'm glad to hear it all worked out in the end and the customer was pleased.
I just had to say that i think it turned out good. I know how hard it is to make a cake suitable for both a boy and girl. I often make our family birthday cakes and each month we have a get together and celebrate everyone born in that month. Well, go figure almost every month there are both girls/boys or women/men. .. I dread coming up with suitable designs for both sexes on one cake..its really difficult to find a balance. I think you achieved a nice balance on this cake, so good work! ;0)
