Okay Nj It's Our Turn To Change The Law Re: Home Bakeries!!

you guys are amazing! I'm so glad I bumped into this forum!
I have been working hard trying to start a home cake business and my friends have fully supported me generating a lot of referrals. I was so down and bummed when I talked to the state and county regarding commercial kitchen requirements and all the B.S. permits and fees for selling cakes and baked goods. I've signed the petition and posted in my facebook account for all of my friends to sign and support the bill. I'm with you guys on this! Let's help generate good home business in our state!
Ok. I was 757 in the petition. I've gotten in touch with a few friends and so far got us to 779. Still working on getting more people...
I received a letter from Sen. Kyrillos today that the bill was introduced on 6/15/09 by Sen. Marcia Karrow (Hunterdon & Warren) and Sen. Christopher Bateman (Morris & Somerset).
Let's keep our fingers crossed (or maybe go deliver some of our "baked goods" as bribes )
I called Sentor Karrow's office today to get a status update on Bill 2908. The Bill was assigned to a committee -- Health and Human Services. Senator Joseph Vitale is the chair of that committee (telephone 732-855-7441). Karrow's office indicated that the best course of action is to contact his office to move things along. I called Vital's office and they transferred me to a voice mail and told me to state my support of the Bill and provide my contact information. Karrow's office also said that the efforts of the group of supporters has been VERY effective -- so good going everyone.
You guys are doing great. If I may offer some advice: when you get a public hearing, you need LIVE BODY support in that room. You need to overwhelm the committee with the show of public support. Not only does this mean recruiting NJ cakers, it means recruiting friends, family, bribing them with cake if necessary, anything to get their bottoms in those chairs. Try to get every caker to bring 5 people with them. It's critically important to getting the bill out of committee.
I was not getting notifications that there were updates to this!
The teaneck woman was shut down... I don't think that's hurting our chances at all, in fact I think its going to help us. I did forward the article to Karrow so she was aware of her. she is our POSTER CHILD! I'm curious what her opinion of the whole situation is and asked for her thoughts.
I spoke with asm. dougherty's office a few weeks ago. He won the primary against Karrow back in June. I wanted to see if he would be in support of the bill if he won the election in November. He is not in favor of the bill in its current format and would like full regulation. he was supposed to be talking with the head of the health dept to find out what they would like to see in the bill and potentially present a different bill at a later date but he could not get his head around making this whole endeavor cost effective. I'm hoping it will be revised so that everyone is happy but that's hard to do.
Kelley, thank you so much for all your input. You have set such an example for the rest of us. It truly is amazing, we can't thank you enough!
Any recent developments on this ??? I'm so anxious to hear what's going to happen next!!!

I was told two weeks ago that no updates (besides the one I posted) would occur until the fall. She told me to call back in October (nothing happens during the summer). But as I said in my post two weeks ago, everyone should be calling Senator Joseph Vitale to encourage him to move it through committee. The bill will die at year end (I think that was the date but that's close enough) and then a new bill will need to be introduced.
Funny, I was about to just suggest forwarding the Teaneck lady situation to Sen. Karrow to see if that would help. But her story was already made public on CNN.com
If she was shut down, I think we should also make that public.... it's ridiculous that she's doing something to help herself and not depend on goverment and the goverment is going to shut it down.
Here's the article:

I just found this thread. My daughter who is a senior in high school is president of poltical activism group at school. She wants to bring this to the teacher in charge of the group and help push this. I am giving her all the information for her group to use. I really hope this goes thru.
Juliebold that's a neat idea, I hope your daughter can help.
Is there any more developments?
I checked the legislative website a week or so ago, and it said it was still in committee so everybody needs to keep on their reps to push it. It is bill S2908.
Good Day All,
Just finished reviewing the online petition and I noticed that we are up to 848 names. I think that is wonderful! Has anyone heard anymore information about where the bill currently stands (is it still with a committee) since the last posting on 9/29/09?
I will be sure to send out my emails to our local reps and pass along the word to have all my friends sign and send letters.
Keep up the great work everyone!
Let's get this passed!
Does anyone know the current status of the bill? I'm eager to have this pass in NJ!!!

Does this mean what I think it means?
Hmm. . .that's dated June 15, 2009, so. . . . I don't get the "not subject to regulation and inspection by the Department of Health and Senior Services"? How is that possible, just a permit?
It sounds to me like as long as the customer is fully aware that the goods were baked in a non-regulated kitchen before the sale, then it's ok to sell non-hazardous baked goods from your home.
A person may sell home-baked bakery goods if the consumer is notified by a clearly visible placard at the point of sale, in a manner prescribed by the commissioner, that the bakery goods were prepared in a kitchen that is not subject to regulation and inspection by the Department of Health and Senior Services.
But I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly before I get too excited
Oh I hope this passes. . . would be big for me. Another baker I know has a business but she also gives out cards and has a website but I am afraid to do that. . . you never know. . .
Just found this topic. This is great!!! I hope it's not too late to show my support. This bill will definitely help soo many of us bring in extra income, especially with the way this economy is today. I was 908 on the petition and am going to try to link it to my facebook to get more support.
Linda
luvtocreate- can you let us know if you are able to link 908 to you facebook, and how you did it. I would like to do the same.
Thanks,
Is there any news on this? I just signed the petition and sent it to a bunch of friends and family to sign as well. I have a hard time believing the health department would let this go through but it would be so exciting if it passed!
Hi Sweetie112
This is what I did to link the petition to my facebook:
When I went to the petition page I clicked on the link that says "Read the NJ Home Bakers Law Petition" when you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see the facebook symbol. I clicked on that and attached it from there. Hope this helped.
Linda
