Hey all! I thought you might like to see a pic of how a Maine whoopie pie looks in person. This is the queen of whoopie pies herself, Ann Bouchard: http://www.wickedwhoopies.com/info.php?ssidx=MzI2MS43Ng==
Hey, its funny that this came up this week! just last week a local newspaper featured whoopie pies on the front of the food section and after reading the article I decided I had to try them! The article is here http://akronohio.planetdiscover.com/sp?keywords=whoopie+pie&skin=&aff=1100&Submit2=Go and answers a lot of the questions that have been asked here on CC. ...However I also tried this recipe http://www.marthastewart.com/article/whoopie-pie?autonomy_kw=whoopie&rsc=header_3recipe from Martha Stewart and found I liked them much better cake wise then the ones in the newspaper article as they baked even, smooth and rounded with a *slightly* dry cake that would work well in combination with the cream filling; the newspsper ones I found spread too much and were *very* moist. I'm still out on the fillings...
Hope this helps!

I made these the other day...used the Wicked Whoopie Recipe, and no one in our house likes them! What is the filling supposed to taste like? It reminds me of Wilton's bc recipe but thick. I followed the recipe to a T, and no one who has tried them liked them at all! Everyone said they'd rather have these made with chocolate chip cookies and my buttercream!
I'm not sure, Jen. It's definitely a "regional" favorite, that's for sure. Here in Maine, they can't keep them on the shelves. They're kind of odd, I guess, not nearly as pretty or elegant as other desserts. But for some reason, they're sweeping the nation! If you followed the Wicked Whoopie Recipe, you've made a decent one. I posted some other recipes on page 3 of this thread. Give them a look over and see what you think. I hope you find a recipe you like!
My kids keep asking for the pumpkin whoopies! I made banana nut whoopies the other night and oh my were they awesome! I have to play around with my recipe though, because they baked up flat.
I made chocolate whoopies for my son to take to school yesterday for his birthday. We rolled the edges in sprinkles and they were really cute! I am not a huge fan of the chocolate ones. But, I am not big on chocolate cake.
Jen when I make them I use cream cheese frosting. They may not be authentic, but I hate shortening icings.
Theresa (playingwithsugar)....did you ever get back to the Amish for their filling recipe? I'd love to try it, if it's as you described. I don't like shortening icings, or really marshmallow creme....so really curious what they do! Your mission, if you choose to accept.... lol
I went, but the girl told me I had to speak with the stand owner, who was not expected until near closing time.
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about it. I bought another one that day, too.

I just tried the Wicked Whoopie Pie and filling recipe. I like the filling but I cut down the vanilla to 3 tbsp after reading a review that said the alcohol flavor was way too strong.
I used an ice cream scoop to scoop the same amount of batter each time. They flattened out way too much and lost their shape.
Any advise from the Whoopie pros?

For my chocolate whoopies I made I just used the recipe on Epicurious.com. Mine come out just like the picture.

There's that damn Pedialyte ad again, right in the middle of my screen!
Third time since I logged on tonight.

Firefox with Ad Block Plus (ABP). Zero ads!
Totally off topic, but GREAT tip! I just did this. Sooo nice. Although if I shop at G. S. A. I do like to click thru from CC so that they know that CC drove the business...but for those times I can just disable it temporarily. Yay!

I have ABP on my machine, and I still see the ads on the sides of the screen here. Is it supposed to block those?
It blocked the ads for me. Are you using Firefox, and did you actually activate ABP? Maybe it's "off" for some reason...? LOL I forgot all about the ads til you just mentioned them. Ahhhh...so peaceful...

It says it's active and shows how many things it's blocked. Hmmm.....
I live in western pennsylvania. We do not make whoopie pies we make gobs. Gobs were originally made for the coal miners to carry in their lunch pails. They were always covered with wax paper, etc so a miner could keep his dirty hands on the paper and eat the gob. A gob (I think) is not as sticky as a whoopie pie. The name "gob" came from the scrap pile in the coal mines known as "gob piles." Enough history stuff.
I bake these for my hubby and his friends to take fishing with them. They love them. Here in western Pa we also have a cookie table at weddings and usually mini gobs are included with all the other cookies. They would dry out if not covered. I attached a photo of my gobs. The traditional gob filling is cooked on the stove first and then then powdered sugar, etc is added. You could cover them individually and then form a large stacked arrangement for a wedding. Ask anyone in western PA what a gob is and they will tell you. Ask them what a whoopie pie is and they won't know. Whoopie pies I think have marshmallow in the filling. I think it is so interesting to hear what special treats are popular in different areas. Long live the gob!!

Dang, that's definitely a mystery. All I can tell ya is, it's working on my machine. I just installed it after reading the recommendation earlier in the thread. Curious...

I would update your firefox and then reinstall the adblock. See if that helps.
I'm glad most of you are finding ABP to work well! I'm sorry, but I don't know how to make it work if it isn't.
I wanted to add that if you are on a website that ABP is interfering with in some way, you can right click the ABP icon to disable it for that particular website. I know this because after months of using ABP, we suddenly couldn't watch youtube. Every video said something like, Sorry, this video is no longer available. I finally right clicked the ABP icon, disabled it for youtube, and no more problems. My son wasn't having issues with youtube and ABP, so we don't really understand what that's all about, but I wanted to share that little tip.
The gobs sound yummy, cakequeen! I don't use marshmallow fluff in my whoopie pies, but I know some people do. God, these things are addicting!
Thanks for that link, Maryjsgirl. I'm ALWAYS looking for another recipe!
these might be a cute idea for a bridal shower I am giving. I could roll each one in colored sugar to match the wedding and then put them in cookie bags and tie them with colored ribbon. Might be cute.
what about the chocolate with oreo filling?
Okay... I just made some chocolate ones from the recipe listed earlier from epicurious. It is wonderful but how the heck do you get them to stay together and not slide off of each other!!!! I can't get them to stay together..
