I made a baby carriage for the top of a shower cake. It's large and the problem I have is that the carriage and hood part are heavy. The wheels will not support the weight. I need to put something under the carriage, between the wheels to support the weight of it, but I don't want it to look bad. Any suggestions what I could use that wouldn't look too terrible?

I have used a small piece of styrofoam covered thinly with fondant under the carriage and small enough so it doesn't come to the inner edge of the wheels. If your carriage is quite heavy I suggest you put a dowel in the cake under the chunk of styro. You don't want it to sink down into your cake.

I think if I were making that carriage, I would put something behind the wheels that was the same color as the cake to hide the fact that there is a support system behind.

You know, if the cake is pink, then a thin layer of pink gumpaste the same size as the wheel to prevent the peek-a-boos. Then, I'd put the main part of the carriage on a cake board cut down to the right size and support it with whatever you usually use for supports in a tiered cake. I'd probably also cover the supporting dowels with the same colored gumpaste so anything you would see through from the other side would match, too.

But, I've never done anything like that, so consider my advice worth what you're paying for it!

You can put dowels painted in white on every wheel so they hold the carriage and if you still need support you can do a bigger one in the center..

if it's for a girl, maybe you could make a fondant or paste ruffle to hide whatever supports you chose to use?

Thank you everyone for your ideas! It's made of fondant with tylose powder added to it. I'll be sure to post the final picture.

Here it is! I used the 6" hidden pillar from Wilton and covered it with same color fondant as the cake. Worked like a charm!

Thank you everyone for your nice compliments! I will try and post a template, but I have to say it was really, really difficult to make that carriage and I kinda made it up as I went a long. We leave for FL in 3 days and then when I return we have my daughter's holy communion (which I will be making a cake for) so if I post any instructions it probably won't be till May. That is such a cute and original carriage! I was going to suggest to put tiny baby toys down there like a teddy and some blocks- but then I saw it was long ago and that cake was made and it was SUPER!
