Need Some Feedback On My Design For Wizard Of Oz Cake

Hi everyone,
My daughter's 4th birthday party is coming up and she's asked for a Wizard of Oz cake. My initial idea had been to make a two tier cake covered in green fondant with a yellow brick road winding around the cake. I'd make all the characters. Thing is...I can't sculpt worth a darn.
My daughter and I made these invitations together (see below) so I came up with a cake idea to play off of them. What do you think? I'm open to any and all suggestions.
The topper would be a round fondant piece with two sparkly red shoes on top. Each tier would be covered in baby blue (Dorothy's dress). The top tier would have a blue gingham ribbon with a smaller red bow over it. The bottom tier would be trimmed in red poppies. The board would be covered with a yellow brick road fondant.
Oooo, I love your invite! They are so cute...and I think you have a great idea for the cake.
It's a great design, I would add a little basket (like the one she carries) or a rainbow somewhere on it too.
Super idea! Good luck and be sure and post it so we can see. This is really exciting! I love the colors and layout.

Great design, great invite!!!!!

Some of that red sparkle edible glitter would be so pretty on the shoes.
Thanks everyone. I guess I'm just worried this cake won't be "fun" enough for a bunch of little kids.
I was thinking of doing cupcakes for my daughters Birthday like this. I am going to make WASC cake and make a rainbow of different colors (bright) then I am going to layer the colors for the cupcakes. I will then frost grass on top and make the yellow brick road. Then I will top with Dorothy's Ruby Red Shoes (lots of Glitter). This is the cute part, when you take a bite there is a rainbow, now get this......the title......Somewhere over the Rainbow
I think your cake design looks great just the way it is -- it's surely "fun enough" for kids!!!! Sometimes, less is more. It's different than most Wizard of Oz things that have all the characters, the rainbow, etc. It's not over the top, it's understated and classy. I can't wait to see it!
The invitations are adorable, too, by the way!
Thanks everyone. I'll try to figure out Toto in a basket. I love the idea of making the actual cake like a rainbow! Fun!
l love Traeyjade's idea of the rainbow colored cake.... that would definately be a fun surprise! Your idea is great, and yes, add Toto and the basket.

I'm going to be making my Granddaughter's 5th birthday next month. She wants the Wizard of Oz as well. I'm like you, can't mold worth beans, so I've beem trying to think of ideas as well. One of the things I might do is make Dorothy's shoes out of cookies and cover with sanding sugar instead of molding them. I think your design is great! I'm just trying to figure out how to incorporate everything she wants on her cake.
I have a cake in June, get this; she loves: gardening, gambling, aliens and minnie mouse!
Can't wait to see your cake!

Pezformom, LOL! How about a gardening Minnie and an alien playing cards?
Making the shoes is my favorite part. I made a zebra print shoe for a friend a year ago and haven't had a reason to do one since. I can't wait to make a red sparkly version of this one. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1212333
i did the skyline of the emerald city on a cake a few years ago, it was super easy, i did it kinda impressionistic ...that would look cute on the bottom layer...i just googled emerald city...and copied that.
Since you are doing the yellow brick road as part of the topper, what if you painted the rainbow on the fondant-covered board?
I would make the bow light blue instead of red, since the focus of your cake is on Dorothy and not the Cowardly Lion. The bow in her hair was light blue, and a solid blue bow would show up well against the gingham ribbon. Maybe texturize it with some grosgrain to differentiate it from the cake fondant, and make it just a shade darker.
Just my .02!
Definately do rainbow colored cake! I did a Wizard of Oz cake last year for my co-worker's kids and I did the rainbow color batter as a surprize (and experiment)--it was a HIT! especially since (in my experience) most kids like yellow, white,or vanilla batters, they usually don't like alot of different flavors
