Red icing for an Elmo

Does anybody know how to get the perfect red for Elmo?
Have been trying but my reds keep turning out either pinky or orangey and I am using lots of colouring....gel kind.
Thanks....need answer in a hurry....appreciate!!

i did an elmo cake for my sons first birthday, i used an entire container of wiltons no flavor red to achieve the red, the pics in my photos if you want to look, the cake isn't great(so don't laugh) but the color was good

What brand are you using? If it's Wilton, I hope it's the no taste kind! I used the regular Wilton red on my son's Elmo cake and boy was that icing bitter!!! I've heard that Americolor Super Red is really good. Also, the icing will deepen in color as it sits for awhile. But I've found with any red you have to use A LOT of it!

I've added red Kool Aid to my icing (as well as the red food colouring). Changes the flavour a little, but the comments I've gotten have been that everybody enjoyed the flavour. Sure beats the bitter taste from a lot of Wilton red.

I have done a huge elmo cake, have posted the picture on my profile too. I had done the red, by adding various Wilton reds and little brown and the best part was, after a few hours the color deepend to become the perfect elmo red color. I had used many shades of wilton red, thankfully the icing hadnt got bitter. the perfect red is all a game of continual addition of red and then hoping it to turn into that perfect red in the next 7 - 8 hours. This probably sounds silly but I had to use Wilton "No Taste Red" with "Christmas Red" AND "Red Red" to get this shade of red.

I, too, have used multiple shades to acheive the true red color. The last time I needed red I started with burgundy as a base, added the red and then some black. Let it set 30 minutes and voila! perfect red. All wilton colors.

I use the americolor red and have never had a problem getting red and I don't have to use loads of it to get there

I made an Elmo cake. I had the same problem. Got frustrated, left the kitchen, came back almost an hour later, and it was totally perfect. The color changed. I used 2 vials of Wilton no-taste red.

Remember the color gets darker...you need to stay one or 2 shades lighter

I too just used A LOT of the Wilton no taste red to make an elmo cake.
Once I let it sit it, it was perfect!
