I said I wouldn't start a cake business until the kids were in school... Why oh WHY did I let it take off while I have a pre-schooler and a toddler!

I am so sleep-deprived it's insane.

MMF with added salt and butter flavoring is delicious! And glycerine for pliability. You should try it - it is so inexpensive to make and only takes 10 minutes:
http://cakecentral.com/cake_recipes_rate-7351-5.html

I think SI tastes too chemical.

Dorothycolaw....I used to be the same way as far as yelling at my kids to get out of the kitchen, stop eating it etc. I was the cake Nazi when I was stressed! But one day, I was in the middle of making my biggest cake to date (at that time) and stepped out of the kitchen for a few minutes. Came back to find my five year old took a cake that was cooling, broke it in half and split it for her and her brother to share!!!!!!!!! I lost my mind, but after talking to her, realized she felt neglected for my cakes.

Well I felt like the worst mom ever! But since then, I took a step back and realized it didnt have to be that way. Now, my kids get to sample everything I make, i always reserve some mmf for them to 'sneak' and they like to sit at the table with me when I work. I got over that much quicker than I thought I would. They help me add the ingredients to the mixer when I'm baking. My daughter especially, likes to sit with a small amount of fondant and try to make things out of it. She evens helps make little pieces for the cakes sometimes and life is so much better!!!

Now we share in the joy of my favorite thing and get to spend more quality time together. Plus, neither of us feels like I am being a bad mom just because I have cake to do!

My goodness I did the same thing!!!! Yes it IS too funny!

I felt proud making my fondant, then one day when I had a little extra spending dough, I ordered some and goodluck I did. A few days after it came I injured my back, I was out of commision for 3 days. With only 2 days to put my next order together I was forever grateful to that bucket of satin ice. I'm a big fan! taste great also.

What brand do you buy at Sam's Club??

I use Wilton for the decorations, but if I'm going to cover a cake in fondant, I use Satin Ice. I think it just tastes better.

I buy Betty Crocker Chocolate icing in the can at the grocery store. icon_rolleyes.gif

Wait! icon_eek.gif Don't smack me on the head yet!!! icon_surprised.gif Let me explain first! icon_razz.gif

I buy the canned frosting (BC Choco only) to use for making pure, pure black. AND, I only use this for piping with my tip #1 for very detailed outlines & designs on my MMF cut out puzzle designs.

It's just soooo smooth & creamy & easy to squeeze thru that danged ole tip 1. So it's not like I cover the whole cake or even use it for decos of any real size.

Most people get so very little of it with their cut piece of cake that they never realize that it's chocolate. icon_lol.gif

Here's the thing...

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in the UK making their own fondant (or sugarpaste, as we call it).

Same as I don't think anyone who bakes cakes professionally uses a box mix.

I'm not saying it's wrong to use one - just that people over here... don't! icon_biggrin.gif

Please don't stone me...it all just gives me time to do more!!!

I said I'd never MAKE my own fondant.........now I make ALL of it (mmf) mostly..........(macsmom's version butter flavored.)

I said I'd never like fondant, but macsmom's mmf actually tastes really good. I still don't enjoy it on cake though! icon_confused.gif Too chewy!

But, it's very easy to make, it's very CHEAP to make (1bag of marshmallow under $1), and it's great to work with.

Thanks macsmom!

Just a funny thought.........the other day I was kneading and rolling out some mmf and my hubby asked me if that was the stuff edible underwear was made from. icon_biggrin.gif So now when I cover a cake with it, he says "the edible underwear frosting cake". icon_lol.gif

Gotta jump on this bandwagon. This self-proclaimed icing snob almost tripped over herself when she tasted CC'er Myesha's cream cheese icing. I stumbled over to her and said, "Where the bowl of leftover icing and a BIG spoon!!?"

Came home from work and was like, yeah I will see what CC has going today. I need a good laugh or conversation going. So I clicked on my fav's and then the CC site and it told me I was 'Forbidden from accessing this site" icon_confused.gif Ouch, that hurt and tried again icon_eek.gif , the same thing. Called my Comcast tech husband. Said "Are you playing a trick on me? I can't get into CC?" he said "No, but that is a good one" that he will have to do that too. Bigger Ouch! I thought I'd never bake and freeze ahead, or make cakes ahead...but some weeks its a lifesaver. Now I have baking days and decorating days, and if the cake gets decorated a couple days early...it sits in the fridge (cake fridge only) and nobody ever knows the difference! Its not like the bakery cakes are made the day before....
