Said I Would Never #&_@%!, But I Did...

I said I wouldn't start a cake business until the kids were in school... Why oh WHY did I let it take off while I have a pre-schooler and a toddler!
I am so sleep-deprived it's insane.
MMF with added salt and butter flavoring is delicious! And glycerine for pliability. You should try it - it is so inexpensive to make and only takes 10 minutes:

I think SI tastes too chemical.
Dorothycolaw....I used to be the same way as far as yelling at my kids to get out of the kitchen, stop eating it etc. I was the cake Nazi when I was stressed! But one day, I was in the middle of making my biggest cake to date (at that time) and stepped out of the kitchen for a few minutes. Came back to find my five year old took a cake that was cooling, broke it in half and split it for her and her brother to share!!!!!!!!! I lost my mind, but after talking to her, realized she felt neglected for my cakes.
Well I felt like the worst mom ever! But since then, I took a step back and realized it didnt have to be that way. Now, my kids get to sample everything I make, i always reserve some mmf for them to 'sneak' and they like to sit at the table with me when I work. I got over that much quicker than I thought I would. They help me add the ingredients to the mixer when I'm baking. My daughter especially, likes to sit with a small amount of fondant and try to make things out of it. She evens helps make little pieces for the cakes sometimes and life is so much better!!!
Now we share in the joy of my favorite thing and get to spend more quality time together. Plus, neither of us feels like I am being a bad mom just because I have cake to do!
Wily kit....OMG i am laughing sooo hard right now. When i clicked on the next page, i turned away for a moment and when i looked back at the screen I said,
"Ewwwh, a bug is on the screen." I looked at it, and picked up a tissue and tried to kill the little bug...much to my surprise...it wasn't actually a bug at all, it was just your avatar. I feel so stupid, but it was funny.
Duh, should've figured that out since it was moving in the same pattern in the avatar box. Blushing...
You got me.

My goodness I did the same thing!!!! Yes it IS too funny!
I felt proud making my fondant, then one day when I had a little extra spending dough, I ordered some and goodluck I did. A few days after it came I injured my back, I was out of commision for 3 days. With only 2 days to put my next order together I was forever grateful to that bucket of satin ice. I'm a big fan! taste great also.
What brand do you buy at Sam's Club??
I use Wilton for the decorations, but if I'm going to cover a cake in fondant, I use Satin Ice. I think it just tastes better.
I said I would NEVER do wedding cakes (too much stress!)... and then I did 70 last year... Now it's pretty much ALL I do.

That is too funny!!! I did the same exact thing and was fixing to type EXACTLY what you did and glanced down and seen the avatar had gotten you too in the same way....
okay, well I didn't get a tissue...that would've meant that I would've had to take my eyes off of him and risk him getting away so I just stared...thinking where in the he** did that come from?????
I said I'd never use boxed cake mix after I'd learned scratch. Well WASC- Chocolate Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll never eat another chocolate cake again.
OK you "cake diva's" I know you're gonna come with your Better than anything cakes.
Maybe it's because I am new at this...but I have never said that I would not do this or that ever. If I think that it will work or someone else does, I will give it a try. LOL.
Ding DingDing Ding we have a winner!!!!
Bravo!!
Great answer, Cake-Buddy.
I buy Betty Crocker Chocolate icing in the can at the grocery store.
Wait! Don't smack me on the head yet!!! Let me explain first!
I buy the canned frosting (BC Choco only) to use for making pure, pure black. AND, I only use this for piping with my tip #1 for very detailed outlines & designs on my MMF cut out puzzle designs.
It's just soooo smooth & creamy & easy to squeeze thru that danged ole tip 1. So it's not like I cover the whole cake or even use it for decos of any real size.
Most people get so very little of it with their cut piece of cake that they never realize that it's chocolate.
Okay, you an still smack me on the head if you want to.
side note, I was just thinking the other day that I wanted to start a thread about our guilty little secrets (like my BC choco icing)
You know, things we do ( ... caking related! ... come on people!) that we ... "just don't tell" anyone about?!
So how about it? I told you mine, now tell us yours!

I admit I use Wilton when I do fondant accents, for me I am only a hobby baker and find it WAY easier. And as all the accents are usually roses that are rock hard no one eats them anyway. ONE DAY I want to make the marshmallow fondant to ice some sugar cookies, we'll see
I said I'd never sell myself short & ended up taking on a friend's Wedding for a cake $200. less than it's worth. I'm a big ol' softy. Oh BTW my 5yr. old walked away mad at me just now Why? I "pinched" your Avatar "Bug" & pretended to eat it. She said, "That's nasty!" Folded her little arms & walked away. (Naughty Mommy).
PS. She said just now, "I'm still mad & that fooled me!" Let me go apologize.
Here's the thing...
I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in the UK making their own fondant (or sugarpaste, as we call it).
Same as I don't think anyone who bakes cakes professionally uses a box mix.
I'm not saying it's wrong to use one - just that people over here... don't!

Ater reading all this, I'm afraid ya'all are going to put me in the hall of shame. I make cakes from the box, I doctor them, but they are still from the box, I buy my BC from Sams, and my Satin Ice from a website, I freeze my cakes, and yes I'm saying it...I give discounts to my friends and family.
Please don't stone me...it all just gives me time to do more!!!

Sharing "leftover' MMF with my grandkids has to be one of the sweetest joys in my life!

I love this suggestion, thanks! I wish I had a guilty hint I could counter with but I'm just not that creative...

I really hope your talking about the BC choco icing & not the smacking me on the head suggestion!!
LOL
I said I'd never MAKE my own fondant.........now I make ALL of it (mmf) mostly..........(macsmom's version butter flavored.)
I said I'd never like fondant, but macsmom's mmf actually tastes really good. I still don't enjoy it on cake though! Too chewy!
But, it's very easy to make, it's very CHEAP to make (1bag of marshmallow under $1), and it's great to work with.
Thanks macsmom!
Just a funny thought.........the other day I was kneading and rolling out some mmf and my hubby asked me if that was the stuff edible underwear was made from. So now when I cover a cake with it, he says "the edible underwear frosting cake".
I said I would never make a cake for profit. I have three children ages 5,4 and 15 months and own a natural parenting store (cloth diapers, wooden toys etc) and dont need another 'business'
I had made a cake for my sons friends birthday and they refered someone to me, Ive got my first paying gig due April 4th
I said I'd never eat another decorators cake and like it as much as my own. However, I must say the competition in my area is VERY stiff. The reason I know this....I bought a slice. No, I bought 2 slices. And I went to the next county over to enjoy it in secret
I will never tell whose it was! I'm just not ready for that level of disclosure yet!

Gotta jump on this bandwagon. This self-proclaimed icing snob almost tripped over herself when she tasted CC'er Myesha's cream cheese icing. I stumbled over to her and said, "Where the bowl of leftover icing and a BIG spoon!!?"
Indydeb: Mind sharing this special cream cheese frosting? Can't seem to pull it up in my site searching. tia

I've no idea. I went to the grand opening of her shop and pretty much was ready to cut off anyone's hands who reached for the cake with her cream cheese icing ... I wanted it ALLL!!!!!!!!!!!!
dkelly - So what your saying is your husband is familiar with edible underwear ?
Hahhahahaahahahaha
LOL! I love this site. You guys are so funny. I love Satin Ice as well. I used to make my own MMF (still love the taste), but it was so temperamental. I admit I do like Wilton Fondant, but only for decorations. It dries so hard.
Came home from work and was like, yeah I will see what CC has going today. I need a good laugh or conversation going. So I clicked on my fav's and then the CC site and it told me I was 'Forbidden from accessing this site" Ouch, that hurt and tried again , the same thing. Called my Comcast tech husband. Said "Are you playing a trick on me? I can't get into CC?" he said "No, but that is a good one" that he will have to do that too. Bigger Ouch! He knows how to do all that fancy stuff. But Whew, I finally got on but for that hour or so I was in complete withdrawls from my friends here on CC. I was in a panic that CC blocked for something I might have said and my mind was running wild with WHY? Ok, I am all better now and got my CC fix now. Thanks for listening.
I thought I'd never bake and freeze ahead, or make cakes ahead...but some weeks its a lifesaver. Now I have baking days and decorating days, and if the cake gets decorated a couple days early...it sits in the fridge (cake fridge only) and nobody ever knows the difference! Its not like the bakery cakes are made the day before....
